I worked at a center for 3 years and quit earlier this year to start a home daycare. The owner/director of the center is against home daycare. I did not work anywhere else or watch/teach any children when I was not at the center. I have done one on one care and smalll group care but that was over 3 years ago.

Who do I use as references? Do I bite the bullet and use the owner/director of the center, risking a bad reference due to her feelings on home daycare? Or do I use references that are 3+ years old?

Another thought I had was to use 2 of my former coworkers who have seen me in action with kids. However, I am not sure if this is ethical. My other concern is if the director/owner gets wind of it, my former coworkers will have to deal with the wrath of the director.

I am just not sure what to do. Any advice is greatly appreciated and welcomed. Thanks

When I first opened, parents didn't really ask for actual references so much as they asked about my experience knowledge and ability to care for the kids.

I think if you are a new home daycare, parents are going to know you don't necessarily have references pertaining to home daycare since you haven't been at it long.

What I would do is talk with them about your beliefs, values and policies and let them know that although you did work in a child care center, they are two very different things.

Honestly, even after all these years, I am rarely asked to give a reference....although I have them readily available. :)

Use the old ones and your former coworkers. I have only had 1 family ever ask for references. It's amazing how many people don't call.

I don't give any contact info for my references. I have them write a statement about my program/ experience etc... Along with their name. Just have you coworkers write a reference paragraph or so. I put all three references on one sheet of paper and give it to parents at the tour.
