Child Size Furniture ????

I currently have the little foam child size seats but the kids drive me crazy using them inapprioprately, ie jumping on them, moving them all ove pulling them onto their heads. Literally anything but sitting in them.

So I am thinking of investing in some good stationary child size couch and chairs.

Which are the best???
I want something that will last and the the kids can use without it becoming a problem.

Does anyone have a set they love and has lasted?

Has anyone bought something that you would absolutely NOT recommend?
Thanks

I have two child-sized chairs from Ikea (the ones that look the same as the adult versions). The kids never do anything inappropriate with them.

The stools at the small able and the chairs at the other tables ... that's another story ... :ouch:

Yeah I found a nice little kaplan school at a yard sale for $1.00
The kids can not play with it 5 minutes and it ias sailing thru the air:mad:

Can you try removing the foam ones when they're not being used properly to see what happens? Or ban the child/children that use them improperly from being able to use them for the rest of the day?

I have small kids size furniture and at first I had some kids that would try to rearrange them and knock them over, climb on them etc. but I just consistently remove the item or ban the child from using it (if I can't remove it) and that works. I'd rather teach the child hwo to use the furniture properly than to have to go out and spend more money to replace it with something else KWIM?

OMGosh I have removed them over and over. I preach all the time "the chairs are for sitting" I stay on them all the time about sitting in them. I need soft child size furniture for FCCRS but it is a constant battle. The foam chairs were given to me by another prvider that went out of business. They are nice Dora chairs (very light) but these kids will ruin them. I have an old recliner (too heavy for them to move around) that is 16 years old and flat worn out but the kids sit in it perfectly with no problems.

I just got these from Target, and they have worked out pretty well. The only thing is they say micro-fiber, but they are more of a linen. Maybe they have some in other colors? I like that they DON't have commerical stuff on them...like Dora...lol

Do you have a Ross store in your area? They dont stock them all the time, but they have child sized faux leather little sofas and arm chairs there. They go for about $99 for the sofa and $69 for the chairs. Tough, cleanable, won't tip and heavy enough to not be.easily pushed around. Like a mini living room. I also got a faux leather ottoman at walmart that is soft to sit on, but has storage inside. You turn the top over and it is a wood play surface. Those are usually in stock at walmart. Love the Ross furniture, but you have to keep checking back. I have seen the kid sized sofas and chairs occasionally at Big Lots also. Local retail much cheaper than child care catelogs, imo. I like the Ikea stuff, thanks for posting!

Never heard or Ross. I will look around. I will look at walmart too. This is kinda a small town and we don't get a lot. I may have to travel a little.
I looked at Kaplan on line but I am afraid the upholster stuff will rip and that stuff is tooo expensive. The Ikea looks nice. I am wondering if it will be soft enough for what FCCRS wants in the soft furnishings area.

Off topic but:
I was actually told by a Stars Program inspector that the Dora and Diego sofas I had are "inappropriate because they depict Hispanics in a stereotyoical way" Really? The same inspector also told me my Cinderella video was inappropriate because it was "suggestive and frightening and implies child abuse. Hmmm. I watched it asa child and I turned out ok.

I had the same Dora Furniture last time FCCRS came and they didn't count off. I just had to put it out the week before they were expected cause the kids wouldn't sit in it without doing flips. But my kids were younger then. Only had 1 3 yr old the rest were toddlers.

How is Dora stereotypical?????
Geezzzz

Oh fccers! Yeah, I do eccers, and I also have bean bag chairs, they totally count toward soft furnishings. So does an oversized pillow, and a small area rug. If you had an area you could put one or two bean bag chairs, a little rug and several soft animals or dolls, you have both soft furnishings and an area for privacy.

Yeah, I was warned yesterday that Barbies are frowned upon as well (not realistic). My dcg has 2 that she has in her nap basket, and one is a "teen" barbie.

My consultant also said she had to argue for one center that had toy soldiers. The raters didn't like them because they promote violence. Consultant pointed out that since about 80% of the dc parents were military people, the raters might want to keep that thought to themselves!

As for the fairy tales...arggg! I grew up on the real German versions of those stories. Birds pecking eyes out of the bad people, ladies cutting off their toes to fit in the tiny slippers...gosh, and I'm only SLIGHLTY demented!

Oh I got the points for soft furnishings with Dora and Diego sofas, it was the "promoting cultural diversity" section I got dinged. They didn't elaborate on WHY it was stereotypical, it was in a written report. I still have those 2 sofas. The more recent inspection did not mention the "cultural" issue. Sooooo subjective. Ugh.

EntropyControlSpecialist 04-12-2012 11:54 AM

I would think having race besides white as a main character in a TV show would be celebrating and embracing diversity.
Stereotypical? I don't think all Hispanic children walk around on adventures with a talking backpack ... nor do others think they do. My Goddaughter certainly doesn't and I've never suspected her of doing so. :p

Maybe it's the monkey that's offensive? NO WAIT! That show clearly depicts weasels in a negative light....swiper no swiping!!!!

I have an anywhere chair from pottery barn. The kids use it for gymnastics. It drives me crazy.

snbauser 04-12-2012 03:11 PM

I use to have issues with it for the soft foam stuff. I replaced it with sturdier stuff and cracked down on the kids about appropriate use. 2 warnings and they were removed from the furniture. I no longer have issues.

edited to add - this is the couch I have along with the matching chair although mine are red. They are costly though but I got mine through a grant. http://www.kaplanco.com/store/trans/...||0&PID=60462P

Grrrr....all the items I want from Ikea aren't available on the site and I would have to drive a good 4 hours to get to the closest store.

I was looking at that couch. Is it holding up well?
I was afraid the vinyl would start to crack?

I have had it about a year and it still looks new and I have 12 kids that use it on a regular basis.

The closest Ikea store to me is 4-5 hours away too but I have had luck finding their products on either Amazon.com or on e-bay. You could try there. :)

director1412 04-13-2012 07:44 AM

We have this at our center and love it! It is easy to clean and maintain and our some of our classrooms saved their Scholastic points and bought it from bonus catalog. It will ship for free when you order with bonus points!

director1412 04-13-2012 07:48 AM

Furniture

We have several pieces of children sized furniture at the center and the children love them. At first they wanted to climb because it was different but once they were reminded of how to treat the furniture they are fine now. We shopped yard sales, scholastic bonus catalogs, and a large local consignment sale for kids to find our peices. We have not spent more than $15 for any one piece so if you keep your eyes on things you can find great deals.

If you want really light furniture, you can go for bean bags. You can also check out foldable furniture. Wood stays good for long. So try purchasing a wooden motion furniture. Many stores like furniture zone & sleep shop are renowned to offer sturdy and creative kids furniture. You can check out their website.
