Book Choices for 6 and 7 Year Olds.....

the SA are kinda beyond easy books like cat in the hat, but i'm not quite sure if they are ready for chapter books. what are some good selections for SA, especially boys? they need some new reading material...thanks for any suggestions.....

I think finding a "series" of books is a great way to keep kids reading!


Patricia Reilly Giff's Kids of Polk Street School books are great!
Louis Sachar Wayside School series have been popular with my guys.
Robert Newton Peck's Soup series.
Beverly Cleary's Henry Huggins and Ralph S Mouse series are super!

Magic Tree House and Flat Stanley are hits with my boys. If those are too wordy yet, there are some great level 3 books out there. Are they into Legos, or Scooby Doo, or some other theme? There are usually Level 2 or 3 books based on characters like that.

My dd7 loves, loves, loves
Calvin and Hobbes,
The Far Side, Get Fuzzy,
Mother Goose and Grim and some other random comic strip books we have around (I didn't realize how many I had until I went digging around when she started consuming them at a rapid rate, but the library has a lot also)
Of course some of the content shoots right over her head and she brings stuff for us to explain, but she just sits and giggles while she's reading.
She also has a new appreciation for the newspaper funnies that her grandpa is just loving. Every time we visit she drags home the dailies from their newspapers.
Archie comics too.
I think there are quite a few graphic novel type comics out for younger readers that they might get a kick out of.

As mentioned above, Magic Tree House gets my vote! DS loves reading them! Sometimes it's nice to take a break from "reading" the book, so try checking out the books on tape version from the library. I check out the book and tape from the library and DS follows along. If the boys are just starting chapter books, you'll have to be careful that they are comprehending what's going on. You might want to think about adding story maps/webs for the boys to do to make sure the book is a good fit.

DS started out with Cam Jansen chapter books when he started Kdg. He read them, but wasn't very interested in them. However, they were a good way to start chapter books. He also liked Fly Guy (I think that's what it's called), another very easy chapter book. You might also want to check at the library for a list of popular books.

The reading specialist I spoke with for our district a few years ago also highly suggested non-fiction books. I can't remember why, but at the time of our discussion it made complete sense

Two of my favorite all time books are The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein and Love you forever, by Robert Munsch

I always cry when I read those books!
