I work for a family that owns their own business. (Nail salon.)

Their child comes to me afternoons only.

Well, I've just been notified that I am losing the girl that comes opposite their child.

I asked all of you if I should term the afternoon boy or offer full time or start advertising for 1 full time kid to fill the spot. Majority ruled that I offer the spot to the part time family. So I did just that today.

It DID NOT go over so well. I told them that I was making changes and not offering part time care anymore. What that means to them is that rather than dropping off between 11am and 1230pm, they now have to drop off at 9am each day and based on their departure time would determine their rate.

Right now DCB comes an average of 27 hours per week. (Which technically is my full time but because I had another girl coming opposite hours, I took him on and charge him according to the hours he's here.)

Under the new rate, if DCD picks up DCB at 3pm each day, their rate WILL NOT change. Same number of hours, just a different part of the day.

If DCD wants to keep the 5pm departure time, they pay more. More hours = more pay.

DCD said went rounds saying,
"When gas prices were 97 cents a gallon, we got more business." (You don't say! )

"I raise my rates customers go somewhere where it's cheaper." (Is that so?! )

"I might just quit my job." (Are you kidding me right now?! Because yes, that would solve EVERYTHING! )

This isn't a charity. It's daycare. He is the one that chose to make a baby. With a baby comes MONEY! And lots of it!

I just had to sit back and repeat, "DUHHHHHHH" in my head for about a half hour.

I'm still not sure what he was trying to get through to me but it's a "changing of the seasons". Daycare today doesn't cost what it did when gas was 97 cents a gallon.

Now if he owned a gas station and gave me gas for 97 cents a gallon, I'd make sure his daycare bill was CHEAP!!!!

I am having a hard time following this. What does the price of gas have to do with what your charging for daycare? Give him your rate, he either wants the spot or chooses to go somewhere else. Explain to him that you only have so many spots and have to do what is in the best interest of your income. You would like him to stay but you have to charge.......

He's telling you that he wants cheap. Give them a deadline where they must sign and return the contract OR give a two weeks notice. Call their bluff.

OH...I did just that! Except I get a 4 week notice.

What he doesn't realize is he IS getting cheap. I guarantee he can call around and he's going to find that he'll pay about $10-50 more per week if he leaves.

Just checking to see if I am on the right page.

You have two part time children that some opposite of eachother (to make one full time spot. One child has given notice. You are offering the other child to take on a full time spot or he needs to find other daycare?

Pretty much. I'm not going to provide any part time care any longer. They have the option to:

Change their hours from 11am - 5pm to 9am to 3pm with no rate change.

Keep the 5pm departure time and pay more.

Find alternative care.

DCD mentioned that gas prices drive his business. The higher the price of gas, the less people come in for "extras"...like getting their nails done.

He was just saying that when gas prices are lower, he tends to make more money. Congratulations...not my problem.

I really should have said, "If you aren't making any money, how is it you can afford to pay me every month, live in a quarter of a million dollar home (checked the county assessors web page) and drive a Lexus?!"

Dang your good I would have checked too

Give him a deadline...or raise his rate to full time tuition!

Good Luck
