Have a family that has been with me a month. Great kids and parents super easy going. He is an insurance agent. Texted me today asking how kids were doing and then asking if he could quote me a price on my personal as well as daycare policy. UGH! I do not like the idea of a dcf having all the personal information on me that an insurance quote would entail. How about you? Do you feel pressured to use daycare parents for services such as insurance, car buying etc

Personally, I would tell him you have enough insurance, and you are fine. Obviously, only say that if you have the insurance.

I'd be leery of using a dc parent service for something.

I once had a family who wanted to exchange daycare services for some egress windows in our house. The dad is in construction. I didn't want to do that. There is so much that can go wrong.

I do not ever use dcp's for business as I've heard too many horror stories and very few positive ones.

I've seen a couple other threads about that topic recently, and they always suggest not "trading services", so to speak. There are often problems when doing business both ways.

Same here. I wouldn't do business with dcfs. Too much can go wrong.

I would just politely turn him down.

We are pretty much in the same biz of offering services for money, I'm sure dcd is doing the same thing. But everyone forgets how sensitive the daycare/parent relationship can be when the chips are down.

If he brings it up again - "I don't do business with daycare families outside of daycare." followed by a big smile and silence

I would just tell him it is a conflict of interest. He should understand this.

Just tell him you're good with what you have. If he says anything state that your licensing agency consider it a conflict of interest and doesn't allow it.

I have an insurance agent as a parent too. I have never been asked about my insurance.
I had a realtor do this once, wanted me to recommend her to anyone, even included my in a mass email requesting referrals.
I think I would refer to Tom blog on exchanging services and say "my laywer advices me not to exchange servIces"

Salespeople are good at asking everyone if they meed their services. I wouldn't be offended. It's how they make money.

I have exchanged services - although I don't think that's what he was asking for. I have new wood floors in my home and exchanged daycare for the labor. We paid for supplies. I also have a very handy dcd who did some odds and ends we really needed done for about a month's worth of daycare. It's worked out well for us, but I know these families well.

I am kind of the opposite of everyone here, I guess. I use daycare families' services whenever I can and feel that it is appropriate. I have 2 that are awesome hair stylists (one owns her own shop), 2 more own their own companies, a doctor that I highly recommend (she's a specialist so I have no reason to see her myself), etc.

What I don't do is feel pressured to shout to everyone that they need to use the services of these people. But if it comes up...

I like the idea of going both ways. It's sometimes called bartering, but I've seen many cases where it caused a problem. Have to take each case individually and decide from there. I think it can be good for one time or short term things, but more likely to be a risk with anything that goes on long term.
