Anyone know of any alternative methods (besides antibiotics) for treating thrush?

I have a newbie here who has it and mom is not wanting to do antibiotics (due to child's young age) so I was curious if there were any alternatives that may be effective/helpful.

Although no longer popular for various reasons, my vote always goes to gentian violet.

Works phenomenally well.

Mom said she talked to her pharmacist and they are no longer stocking it or recommending it.

She has been treating with plain yogurt (??). Don't know if that really helps or not.... it does seem to be getting better but not really going away though.

Mom is treating both her and baby.

Does anyone know if it is painful for baby?

Thrush is painful for baby (it is a candida yeast infection of the mouth), but can be soothed with Clove flavored sugar sticks (the soft kind that melt on contact, crush a bit between your fingers, swab over gums, works for teething as well), natural anesthetic.

It will cycle out in 2-3 weeks, tops, naturally. Yogurt can help, although the anti-fungal mouth swabs (RX) make it go faster, IMHO.

I know when my kids had it while nursing it made my nipples feel like itchy fire so I would assume a baby's mouth would feel similar discomfort.

I'dtell her to go to a different pharmacy or buy it off the internet. It's been used for many generations and most people you ask will swear by it

I would ask why pharmacist no longer stock it before putting it in an infants mouth...
I'm all for whole/natural alternatives but IMO it isn't nice to let a baby go through suffering for it...

Thank you! I will pass this info onto mom.

I will ask mom to ask pharmacist for more details....it would be good info to have for future reference.

I have only had one DCK/DCM have thrush before and she used the gentian violet remedy so I KNOW it works but when this particular mom mentioned not using it, I figured I would ask the wise ladies of the forum for alternatives...

It started last week and didn't seem to be a real big issue but by the time baby went home on Friday, the tongue was COVERED!

Mom did the yogurt treatment over the weekend and this morning the whiteness seemed to be a lot less but then over lunch time whenever I tried to feed, the baby screamed so I assumed it was/is painful considering the behavior.

Thanks for the advice/suggestions ladies...I will keep you posted.

Does mom realize that the anti fungal swabs and the Genetion violet are NOT ANTI BIOTICS??

They are topical and aren't systemic like anti BIOTICS.

Both are safe, and work great.

You can use a good quality probiotic in capsule form (open it), mixed with a tiny amount of yogurt (plain). Spread it on nipples when beginning feeding, and again after feeding. Leave on until dry.
Before next feeding rinse nipples gently and reapply.

ETA It CAN be painful, but it is not always painful, for mom or baby.

Oh, that is awful.

I'd wonder if they did boil/disinfect all toys/pacifiers/bottle nipples etc. to prevent re-infection?

Mom decided to take baby in this afternoon to see the pediatrician. The diaper area is now flaming red so mom decided it was best to bring baby in.

As far as mom being treated, she said she is doing yogurt treatment on her nipples, but she also said she uses a nipple guard while nursing so that has definitely helped.

We'll see what the Dr says this afternoon.

Poor babe.
