I don't like that he asked to see the broken one but I bet that was mom talking. I probably would have just told him I threw it away because it was broken and unsafe for the children to use. And I would take the new toaster and put it out of toy rotation for a while but I do think dcd had good intentions with making the child replace the item she broke.
Yes, I am!
What bothers me is that he not only insisted on seeing the item, but questioned DD on how it could have possibly happened - essentially forcing her to explain *yet again* how it happend and demonstrate to boot! It just doesn't sit well with me. I'll say it again, like attracts like - I've rarely had dcp's that weren't similar in thought and temprement - for better or worse!
daycarediva 06:27 AM 07-18-2014
Update!
I put all the kitchen items away that evening. The "new" toaster is put in storage and will not come back out when dcg is here. Dcm picked up and asked how her day was (it was fine) and specifically asked about any time outs. (none) I asked if she needed any clarification on my discipline policy ( no). It was very short/ rushed.
Then I got an email informing me that dcg will be starting UPK in fall. They didn't give a formal notice. This was after just last month dcm & Dcd said they are keeping dcg here until K. They either lied OR they don't have a UPK spot because registration ended 5/1 for sept and it's already full. I gave them notice today for mid-August. Pickup will be awkward!!!
I have a temporary family filling in a space until a new kid starts in August. Temp family wants a long term space, so there will be zero income loss from this unless they pull sooner, which is fine by me!!

Well that went exactly where we thought it would! Good luck to the upk teachers... When does upk start? After your term date? Did you tell them why?
lovemykidstoo 06:35 AM 07-18-2014
Wow, they're pulling her over a toaster that SHE broke? You're better off without them. So they didn't give you a definite day that would be her last? Is that what you mean when you said you wrote back giving them notice for mid-August? Great that you won't have a loss in income with a new client.
daycarediva 06:45 AM 07-18-2014
No the email was similar to:
Just wanted to give you a heads up that Susie will be going to UPK in fall.
UPK starts the second week of Sept, and I have them notice for when *I* need their space 8/15 (or have to let temporary client go).
So they either lied and had her registered already OR they're lying about her having a space now and are looking for another prek option or bluffing to me grovel (never going to happen). Either way, sayonara!!

Are you going to ask them?
I would.
Just for the sole purpose of making them uncomfortable.

Exactly. If nothing else, make them squirm trying to answer. I would say something like "Oh, I guess I was surprised after you said that she wouldn't be going until next year and also because I know the registration has ended and they're full". squirm squirm squirm

I wonder if they will buy her a toaster for a wedding gift if she gets married? Cuz you know how upset she gets when there's no toaster in the house....

With as many responses this thread has gotten, it's quite clear how stongly we all feel about being challenged over minor/ everyday occurances that we have all but mastered handling.

They will give you the waiting list excuse so if they do you term early because you have a kid on your waiting list who needs care. Darn wait lists!

ETA: Ooops, maybe I should finish reading a thread before replying. Sorry. This went a different way than I expected. But glad it all works for you!!

I'm glad I have someplace to vent/get advice to fellow providers who completely understand what I'm going through.
Can you imagine if we had to justify our disciplinary actions to EACH parent for EACH kid. Every "don't you dare" or "you know better" look. Every TO. Every redirection. Every "You are excused from this activity/the table"
THAT would be a FT JOB!
I am going to say to whichever parent picks up "How on earth did you manage to get Susie Q enrolled in UPK after the registration deadline? I just spoke a UPK teacher friend and they are full and doing a lottery for anyone who backs out."
Yes, I've been practicing it.
LadyK8 09:32 AM 07-18-2014

LMAO!
They told me they were leaving in fall. I gave notice for mid aug (almost a full 30 days).
It was awkward. I did my little speech, and then Dcm said that they were on the waiting list, but she called to see if the had the space yesterday, and they did. I'm fairly certain that's a blatant lie, she had enrolled her and was accepted but didn't want to tell me until the last minute. Telling me yesterday was her way of sticking it to me. Whatever. Dcm said she feels dcg has outgrown my program. I just did the eyebrow raise.
Dcg isn't even CLOSE to outgrowing my program, and unfortunately our UPK program isn't so great. I feel badly for dcg, but there's nothing I can do.

I realize I'm coming in WAY late on this, but I'm blown away by this dcm--it's that sense of entitlement so many parents are now teaching their children. Lord forbid they ever experience any disappointment! I frequently remind my dck's this: "These are my toys. I share them with you all, as long as you treat them nicely. If you mistreat my toys, you won't be allowed to play with them." Sometimes I'll throw this in: "I wouldn't come to your house and treat your toys the way you're treating mine.".......but I'll admit I think it would be fun sometimes! Lol

No respect for others' belongings! I swear some kids go out of their way to step on a toy.

I will often break up an argument between the kids of "That's mine! No it's mine! No it's mine!" By taking the toy away and saying "actually, it's mine and I'm sharing with you. I see you don't appreciate my sharing so now I will take it back"
Or when I hear the "it's mine" argument I'll ask "wait... who's toy is it?" They respond "yours..." I tell them "that's right, now are you going to share my toy or should I take it back?" Usually ends with me taking it away of course

That was a good punishment, having to replace what she broke with one of her own toys. very good DCD. (of course dcm will most likely by dcg a new one)
