Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>Where Do Your Own Kids Do Homework?
Crazy8 07:16 AM 07-23-2012
Was just thinking about this as I start to buy school supplies and get organized before the school year starts up again! The "homework hour" in my house is always crazy. I am back and forth between my kids and the daycare kids, getting some of them ready to go home, etc.

So wondering where do your kids sit to do homework and where are your dc kids in relation to that? I used to have mine at the dining room table which is right off the playroom but they were too easily distracted so I moved them to the kitchen but its still chaotic all over the main floor of the house at that time and then I'm dealing with one being done and wanting to watch tv in the family room which can be seen from the kitchen, then distracting the others, etc. I need a homework room, LOL!!!! Just curious how others do it.

I make mine wait till everyone is gone, dinner is done and its quiet. One of mine does start earlier but I let them know I can't help them till everyones gone. They average 3-4 hours though and need to start earlier. They do theirs usually in the livingroom and in the evening we do our at the dining room table.

My daycare space is separate from my living space, so the daycare being a distraction isn't an issue for us. Even so we don't start homework until I am done working, which gives the kids a break after school and allows me to be able to help them if they need it.

Could homework wait until after all your day kids are gone?

I always let mine play with the kids and at 5 when they started to leave they would sit down and start to work. The table worked for us as I fixed dinner.

We have that same issue at our house. The daycare takes up the whole downstairs & my son is easily distracted by all the noise. We tried having him do homework upstairs last year, but that didn't seem to work out well. During football season (july-oct) we can't have him wait until the other kids leave because we have to rush out the door to football practice. Its so late by the time we get home, he barely has time for dinner & a shower. The only thing that seems to work for us a little bit is when my husband helps with homework duty when he gets home from work while Im still on the clock. We don't really have anywhere but the kitchen table for him to work. My husband just has to work extra hard to keep him focused & I have to work extra hard to keep the daycare kids quiet & busy. Can't wait to see what this new school year brings Good luck to you!

Mine do homework while I make dinner once most of the DCK's are gone. They sit at the dining room table.

Upstairs in our living room or upstairs in his room at his desk. They are not allowed upstairs, it is my family's space.

Mine do it at the dining room table. When they do it depends on what is going on in the evening and how much they have. DS will have a lot more this coming year then he has ever had, but will also be home almost 1-1/2 hours earlier than DD. He will probably choose to start right after school. He does get distracted a little by the kids, but he can also go to the desk in my room. My dd usually procrastinates as long as possible and is usually finishing it up before heading off to school in the am while eating her breakfast.

waiting till kids go home isn't an option for us as my kids have to be out the door by 5:30 for practices most nights and we don't get home till after 8pm. DD gets home earlier and has the most homework so she at least starts during nap time - she is older now and a good student so I may let her start doing it on the desk in her bedroom but my other kids all come home at 3:30 and need to have everything done before 5ish so they get to have a snack and a few minutes to unwind and then have to get started. I think the kitchen table is my only option for them.

OMG, you just described our situation to a T!!! Both my boys play football and DD does cheer. It is sooo nice the days DH is home early and can help them while I can focus on the daycare kids!!!

This is why I LOVE summer! No time frames for anything, clear evenings, just down time-.

I get so sad when school starts and there is no family time and its rush, rush, rush. Sad that kids only get maybe 3 out of 12 months to relax-

Can you gate off the area where they're doing homework to try and keep it quieter?

it is gated, the dck's can't get to them in the kitchen. It's just that my attention is divided between my kids at the table doing homework and the daycare kids right after nap, some of which are being picked up, etc. during that time so not really a nice quiet time of day, not to mention my other kids wanting to watch tv or play in the area because they are done with homework while others are still working, etc. etc. Just a crazy hour or two!!!

We homeschool so this is an all day thing that we deal with. I have a desk for my kids near my desk in the living room which the daycare kids don't play in. So it is open but somewhat removed from the hub of daycare stuff.
