Potty Training...What Are The Parents Thinking?

Freshly potty-trained child...as in, we're still in the phase of "put on the underwear and cross the fingers" (this is his first day in undies at daycare)...

WHY, please god, WHY do you dress the boy in stiff jeans, with a button and zipper, and a freaking BELT?!?

At least he isn't in a onesie today like he often is, but omg, really?

I'm going to mention it to them tonight that for the next few weeks, simple clothes like sweats are in order, but still...argh, sometimes common sense just isn't so common I guess. I didn't think I needed to mention the clothing thing ahead of time.

Ah, well, live and learn, I suppose...this is the first one I've had potty training while at daycare, so it's new ground I'm breaking here. Not the first kid I've trained though...except my DD mostly trained herself so I still feel like I'm on rather shaky ground here!

Good luck....I am assuming he has went accident free for the past 2 weeks since he is now in undies....if not, uh oh. yes, sometimes parents don't use their head at all.

I've had this and had to start sending them back out the door if they showed up in jeans. I use the example of an adult trying to pull up jeans, do the zipper and snap the snap while wearing big chopper mittens (not gloves and not thin mittens). If they actually think about it they couldn't do it without struggling. Once they are reminded of their child's difficulty and the fact that this sets them up for failure rather than a feeling of sucess they think through their clothing choices a little more.

Some parents go a little overboard with the "big boy" thing...i.e. the belt, LOL!!!

Sweats or shorts only during potty training. If they come in jeans I just switch them into my sweats and switch them back before they leave.

How did he do? No plastic pants over the undies for starters? EEK!

Yeah...I thought of putting him in a pair of my DD's pink sweats, but decided to roll with it for the day. He's not quite to the point of being able to get his pants off independently even without the button and belt!

He did great, actually--he's been wearing undies at home for a couple of weeks and has been doing fine except for poop. I gave the parents permission to bring him in undies starting today--last week he had started occasionally initiating potty trips even when he was in a diaper and I've been thinking for awhile that he would be like my DD; trained as long as there was no diaper.

He initiated a few potty trips and went each time I asked him if he needed to go (we've got a verbal delay that we're dealing with in his case). Kept the same pair of undies dry all day, had an issue with poop in his pull-up after nap, but that's no biggie. DCM and I are thrilled with his progress! Now if we can just figure out the pooping...

And I gave dcm the "hint" at pick up that easy pants like sweats would be best for awhile.
