I know that there are probably a dozen threads on this, but search keeps saying different. So, I'll just ask.

DCM called this morning. DCG started running fever yesterday and went to ER last night. She has RSV and pneumonia. She's 18 months old.

She hasn't been around the other kids since Thursday, a week ago. She was around my husband on Saturday. He has COPD, so that is a concern. However, at that time, she was fine with no signs of illness.

I need to know how long before she showed symptoms would she have been contagious to know if I need to let the new baby's mom know.

I also need to know how long she should stay out so that she won't spread it. NIH said she could be contagious 3-8 days, but if she was a weakened immune system, it could be as long as 4 weeks. This child has every allergy under the sun and a constant sneeze and runny nose.

How long should I insist that she stay out? My other kids are 18 months and 7 weeks.

I just had a case of RSV in Jan. The child who had it here was 8 weeks and hospitalized because of it. I asked for advice on here as I had a 1 year old and a 12 week old infant and two 2 year olds. Basically they said a couple days, like fever free for 24 hours. I was so nervous about RSV because I have 2 nephews who got it very young and even at 2 and 6 years still have lasting effects of it. I read online that some infants can shed RSV for up to a month, but there is no way to tell if they are or they are not. The family I had ended up being out for 3 weeks due to hospital and then I asked them for at least one more week and they opted to stay out for 5 weeks until their son was completely symptom free. Good Luck

My friend's child got RSV at 12 months. She hired a temporary nanny for a month after the recovery due to the weakened immune system. I would not let that child back in care for a few weeks if I were you.

Thanks everyone. I was at the clinic with my husband this morning, so I talked to him about it. He said she should be excluded until she is without fever 24 hours and feels up to participating. That's what my illness policy says anyway.

I guess I'm mostly concerned about the part that said they can throw off infection for 4 weeks.

I'll just be double diligent with bleaching, lysol, and good old soap.

I appreciate your info.

Children are most contagious before they start to show signs of illness. All of my daycare kids just got RSV, and Pneumonia so that last two weeks have been terrible! Each child stayed out for a week. One doctor said they can "shed" the virus for up to 21 days after they are diagnosed...That was new to me!

My little nephew got it a couple weeks ago and the hospital told him to keep him out of daycare for a entire week. I had a case of RSV with a little guy here with computerized immune system and he was out a day and returned the next. Parents didn't seem at all effected or overly worried. I ashually watched him over night when he was sick but mom and dad where in a wedding and when they came to pick him up the next day I told them he needed to go to the hospital he was very sick. My tues he was back in my care. Now I know better. Next time any child with RSV will be asked to keep their child an entire week. Thank God no one else got it!!
