Do parents even LOOK at their child in the morning??

Turned away sick kid at the door this morning. Really??? I noticed how bad he looked the second he walked in and parent thought they should bring him?? So sick of this.
I have a backbone, I have a sick policy, etc. I am just really fed up with parents trying to push it lately. Times are tough, I know they can't keep taking off work and times are tough for me too, I can't afford to term but I really just wish people would start considering the welfare of their kid instead of how they can get every pennies worth out of me.

sorry, just my vent for the day. And I could have slept an extra hour if I knew this one wasn't coming. booo!!!

Sorry your morning started off that way. Hopefully your day gets much better. And poor kid, he probably loves cuddling with mom while he isn't feeling well. And go you for standing your ground and having a backbone that I sometimes lack!

Good for you for standing your ground! This is one of my biggest pet peeves. I just love when parents will bring a kid who has a runny nose and blame it on "allergies." Of course it always seems to work out for me that the runny nose is clear until the parent leaves and then the green snot decides to come out. And then the coughing starts. Yeah...that's allergies. It's a hard situation to be in on both sides, and one of the reasons I won't go back to work outside of the home...I know I wouldn't be able to miss as many days as I would need for my own sick kids! (asthmatics)

Good for you. If you take sick kids everone gets sick. You can't take care of anyone's kids if you're sick.

You have no idea how many times a certain dcg has been dropped at my door with unbrushed hair, sick with dark bags under her eyes, toothpaste in her hair, ketchup on her face from the night before etc etc.....ugh.

I try to understand both sides too, and it stinks to be paying for daycare when you have to take off work and you can only take so many days and I know a lot of it DOES stem from allergies, but whether the cause is allergies or not the stuff coming out of the child from coughing and runny noses IS still spreading to other kids and getting them sick too. UGH!!

My friends daughter has pnemonia right now - started with a cough that WAS most likely from allergies. Still got her sick!!!!

I agree that we should always try to view things from the perspective of the parent. And you are correct, some of their runny noses and coughing are caused by allergies. Which makes our job really difficult when we are trying to decide whether they are sick or not. That's why we send home if symptoms of "allergies" also include fever, vomitting, diarrhea, or green nasal discharge (b/c those symtpoms are indicative of an infection).

But I have to disagree that runny noses and coughs caused by allergies can spread to the other kids. An allergy is the body's immune response to something foreign entering their body. It cannot spread to another person. Therefore, someone presenting allergy symptoms; if they do not have a virus or bacterial infection; cannot spread their runny nose or cough to someone else. Only viruses and bacteria (and other pathogens) can spread.

I have never heard of someone getting pneumonia from a cough due to allergies. Pneumonia is caused by viruses and bacteria. Therefore, it cannot be caused directly by a cough due to allergies. A virus or bacteria must be present for pneumonia to occur. In your friend's case, she may have started off with allergies, but somewhere down the line she must have picked up one of the viruses or bacteria that are known to cause pneumonia.

Just wanted to clear that up.

I am soo glad ive stayed home with my kid because he DOES always have a runny nose with thick green snot, it comes out his eyes its so bad, and he has gotten pneumonia from all his mucus. His doctor kept telling me its allergies but i got sick of it not working and brought him to an allergist and guess what? No allergies. Brought him to ear nose and throat specialist and his problems are from enlarged tonsils. Point is, you cant really assume anything. We are daycare providers, not healthcare professionals. I am sure if i worked outside the home, i would of lost my job due to my son having something that was not contagious.

sorry I wasn't more clear - I was saying it started as a cough due to allergies, obviously it progressed to more and she knew to get it checked out, the point I was trying to make is when parents are dismissing every cough/symptom as allergies and ignore it when it becomes more because its "just allergies". Does that make more sense???

And snot is snot, I don't want it all over other kids/toys whether it is allergy related or virus related, LOL!!!

I hear the allergy excuse too and my next question to them is "Oh, which allergy medication are they taking?" When it's none, I know they're full of bunk.

We have one child that perpetually has slimed sleeves. (Yes, we always have tissues available but sleeves are his thing.) I made the mistake last week of helping him push them up before painting. EWWWWW! I was bogey'd!

Allergies are HORRIBLE right now in New Jersey and anyone that is in the least amount allergic to spring pollens had better already be on something. My son's Pediatrician told me to put him on his allergy meds in February this year. He will be on them through mid-June and then will probably be back on them from Sept. until whenever there is a frost. Yes, I have an allergy kid and I do my best to keep him from getting sinus infections... which lead to bronchial infections, etc.

And Crazy8 - do they look at their children? Sometimes I wonder. I do think some people only bathe their children and comb their hair on the weekends. I've been known to wash faces and decrust noses on a pretty regular basis at work.

I had a parent call in on Monday morning saying "Oh, I don't think **** is feeling very good this morning, he won't be at daycare today"

So yesterday I asked what was wrong with DCB... she replies "Well, he had a fever all weekend and then just before I called he puked all over himself and me"

Oh?

Then she proceeds to say "I know it was from his shots so I was going to bring him but then decided to keep him home".

First of all, this is the same mom who takes a sick day for herself when she has the sniffles... but dopes her kid up and tries to drop off at daycare on a regular basis... trying to convince me that her child isn't possibly sick - even though the rest of the daycare (including hubs and I) are. Every time.

Secondly, why did she say in the message "I don't think **** is feeling very good..."? What the fever and puking didn't give the CLEAR message he isn't feeling good? You have to think about it?

Anyways, I burst out laughing and told her "I don't do fevers or puking... I don't care what you THINK caused his fever or puking, I don't do either. You know that." I was pissed that she could say something so stupid. She shut right up.
