Walking Rope

I've heard of these in a couple of posts, and have seen them online. Do the kids actually hold on? I've thought about trying one since we go for lots of walks and we go to the park often. My worry with my 2 yo's especially is that they are so unpredictable. I feel like if they saw something interesting they would let go and run off. Right now I put the youngest 2 in my double stroller and the others wear harnesses, holding hands. Occasionally one will let go and try to run off, which is where the harness comes in great. The trouble is that they can get tangled up if the kids aren't holding hands and staying together

I just use a jump rope. I put my most responsible kids on the end and I walk at the front, leading. I hold the hand of the littlest one or push the stroller with a rope tied to it. The children are reminded of the rules and the oldest kids are instructed to be my big helpers and make sure that we keep all the little ones safe. The littles are told they are big kids and are going to walk with the big kids holding on to the rope and not to let go.

If someone lets go, EVERYONE tells that child to get their hand back on the rope and no one continues without everyone on our chain.

This has always worked well for me.

If I have lots of littles (non walkers or known runners), I'll push a stroller and have the oldest child also pull a wagon in addition to the jump rope.

I use a walking rope like this: (Lakeshore)

I know Daycare has one like this: (Walk-o-dile)

I love walking ropes. My DH usually holds on end while I hold the other...kids in between.

If I don't have additional hands, I tie one end onto the stroller and have my oldest kid be the other end.

I also buddy up the kids...an older one with a younger one so that they can help each other out. I didn't think holding onto a rope could be so difficult but I've got a couple DCK's right now that can not grasp the ring/loop on the rope let alone the concept of continuing to hold on.

Most of mine won't hold the rope, and we cross two busy streets to get to the park so I bought tot a long ropes. They Velcro around the Childs wrist and I attach the other end to the double stroller.

I love using our walking rope! I got it because I only have 2 hands but 5 kids when we cross the street. My kids range in age from 22 months to 4 years old and they walk very nice with it. They actually get excited about using it! They know to hold onto their colored handle.. and take it quite seriously.. if they trip and fall, sometimes they refuse to let go of the rope while they struggle to get back up

But the falls don't happen too often and they can't really get hurt using it, especially since we walk like snails!!!

I always have my 4 year old dcg in the back so she can help keep an eye on the little ones in the middle.

I also use the tot-along -ropes. I have been using theese for 15 years,I push at least a double stroller and 2 children are attatched up front on either side 2 youngest at back next to me and 2 in stroller. At 2 yrs old children start walking before that they are in the stroller.Depending on ages I have double triple and 5 seat strollers.I tell people I have strollers like other women have shoes.I did look into the walk-o-dile but this way has worked forever. We call it our safety strap I never wanted to take a chance a child would bolt.

Those are great, I have to get one!
I've been doing it the hard way with the in-line formation.

I made my walking rope out of 7/8" ribbon! It looks like the first pic that blackcat posted but the rings part are just looped ribbon. All of mine hold on but I have 3 yr olds and 5 yr olds. We walk to and from school everyday so it comes in handy :)

I made all the loops different colors too. So I would tell everyone a color to grab and "we get what we get and don't throw a fit".
