Names - OT

I have a real thing for baby names. So I was thinking of what the best and worst baby names we have ever had at the daycare.

I won't ask what your worst was, at risk of it being the name of another DCP/their DD or DS, but I would like to hear everyone's favorite names past or present.

My favorites are:

Chase, for a girl. Hayden, for a girl. Finley, for a girl.

Guthrie, for a boy. Knox, for a boy.

Starburst 04-09-2013 09:59 PM

There were two little girls at my old job who were sisters and the oldest had the prettiest name combo (first and middle): Isabella Heart; which means "beautiful heart" (she went by "Bella" before the Twilight craze but after that her parents insisted she go by Isabella) and her sister was named Giovanna (Also really pretty; went by GG for short). And there was one baby girl there named Amor (Spanish for "Love") which I thought was kinda cool and there was another girl named Sunrise (we called her "Sunny"). A girl I used to babysits name was Camila.

Most of the boys there were really common and trendy names that don't really stand out. I think the one that stood out the most for me was Finnegan (or Finn for short). A little boy I used to babysit was named Alessandro (Italian version of Alexander), his little sister couldn't pronounce his name so when he did something she didn't like she would say to him: "No, No, 'Sasho!". Eventually he would refer to himself as "Sasho" that would be a cute boy name.

Apparently Italian names are on the rise.

Worst baby boy name ever was a sibling set Maddoxx and Manngo.

MANNGO was a BOY. They pronounced it ManJo.

His brother called him Man GOO, which his parents loathed. Hysterical.

My favorite all time names, my kids have. Except dd, who I wanted to name Evelyn and call her Evie for short. My BFF used it instead when I was done having kids, so now my god daughter's name is Evie! :D

I don't really care for all of the trendy boy names out there. I really like traditional names, which are making a comeback around here. DS has a Charlotte, and Anne, a Ryan and a Christopher in his class. First year I had heard some of the names before.

He also has two Connors, two Gavin's, two Ayden's, one Ryder and a Navaeh.

daycarediva 04-10-2013 03:32 AM

Almost forgot, I used to work in pharmacy in a poor section of my already poor town. Some of the names....oh em geee!

Jelyjuan (gel-eye-jew-juan), Notorious, Portrite.... pronounced portrait, Angle... pronounced angel.... the list could go on for days.

I love Eyelyn!! Someone I knew had a friend who wants to name her baby this and I am hoping she does!! Very pretty, even as Evie!

I wanted to name DS1 Mason but, was shot down by DH and we settled with Jack. I always wanted to name a boy Jack but, it has become so common I was looking for other options...to this day I am glad we went with this good, solid, strong name! I can't imagine yelling "Mason" now instead of "Jack" when he is in trouble!

I have wanted to name a girl Charlie ever since I saw Hitchcock's "Shadow of a Doubt" in my 20's. I love, love, love that name! I loved it so much that before I was preggers with DS2 I decided even if we had a boy I would name him Charlie. Well, DH's cousin also had the same idea and even though they don't live here I couldn't name our son the same! Somehow Spencer came into play and this too fits him perfectly!:)

I also really liked Meredith when we were pregnant last time. It sounded really cute with our last name, which also starts with M. I too, love the classic names that are coming back. The trendy names drive me bonkers sometimes since there will be 5 of the same name at school. I wanted to avoid that with my boys and so far I think I have! I think Jack lost it's big popularity prior to my son and I don't know if Spencer was ever very popular!

bunnyslippers 04-10-2013 04:22 AM

I have a William and a Benjamin. If we had one more, it would be Harrison or Eva.

I also love Beatrice and Eloise for girls. I like the old-fashioned names!

Jack is my absolute favorite boy name.

EntropyControlSpecialist 04-10-2013 05:27 AM

There has yet to be a little boy or little girl here that I love their name. They are all extremely common/traditional (and at times pretty bizarre).
I prefer unique names, which tends to be obvious when you know my children's names.

Meeko 04-10-2013 06:04 AM

I had three sibling boys who were Tsion (pronounced Zion), Jahai and Isaiah. LOVED those kids! Their mom was one of my best clients ever.

Meeko 04-10-2013 06:09 AM

Once had a boy called Adali (Adda-lie). He was strange kid. Almost 5 years old, but knew nothing except his name.

"How old are you?" "Adali"
"Where do you live?" "Adali"
Are you cold?" "Adali"

Parents were both creepily weird (high). Grandma was the one who interviewed. He was only with me about 6 weeks before I asked them to leave. Parents were both druggies.

countrymom 04-10-2013 06:10 AM

lately I've heard the boy name "cash" that is just wierd. Odd has a Helen in her class. I think old names are coming back, which I love. All my kids have old middle names.

Meeko 04-10-2013 06:11 AM

I currently care for a 6 month old baby girl named Charlee Rose. I adore that chubby, smiley little darling!

AfterSchoolMom 04-10-2013 06:15 AM

My own children have my fave boy names, though DH shot down my most favorite (Tristan). My favorite girls' name of all time is "Anna". If we'd had a daughter, that would have been her name.

I've never had any kids here with unique names, but I went to college with a girl named "Ode". I always thought that was really pretty.

momofsix 04-10-2013 06:23 AM

I have some very interesting names in my dc that I just love! Italian, Ethiopian, Indian, Biblical, and some very traditional and some very unique American names. I don't feel comfortable listing them though because anyone familiar with my dc that read the list would know who I am!

I love Charlie/Charli/Charlee for a girl. I have heard it as a nickname for Charlotte, which I really love.

My daughter's name is Ryan. :)

My sister's children are Kylea (pronounced Ky-lee) and Rhys

Other odd or unique names I've had in care or friends' kids names are:

Croix
Nevada
Eilie
Nihlo
Burkeley
Andersen
Shawnee
Kellin
Chisholm
Sunshine
Tate
Tiajia
JeTanna

TheirEmi 04-10-2013 06:27 AM

My kids are Nathan, Laura, and Aaron

My favorite names of my dcg's are Paige and Pierce
Of dcb's , Christian, Kinnan, and Barrett

All those family names that are used as first names. Can you tell I'm from the Deep South?:)

Meeko 04-10-2013 06:39 AM

My own kids names are pretty regular!

Adam
Drew
Hollyann
Ashlee

ABCDaycareMN 04-10-2013 06:39 AM

I like unique names but not off the wall weird.

My sons name is Kaiden (wasn't at all popular when I named him) and my daughter is Tahlia (tahl.ya)

We are looking for a boys name for our future child and I don't like anything or if I do husband hates it. But so far I like Jarett, Wesley.

For a girl it will be Jocelyn Anne.

LittleD 04-10-2013 06:40 AM

I know a child name Magpie. That is one name I never could like.

KDC 04-10-2013 07:04 AM

Here are some of the 'odd' names from DCK's, family & Friends... Some are really stinkin cute.

Atticus - boy
Samson - boy
Agnes ('Aggie') - girl
LeRoy - boy
Sofia Belen - girl (belen was middle name)
Lilliana - girl
Elliemae - girl
Brinnley - girl
Bryton - boy
Franchesca ('Frankie') - girl

MotherNature 04-10-2013 07:04 AM

I have a Sebastian, which is my eldest's birth name. ( born Sebastian Cain, now Gwendolyn Idris). My other children are Michael Armand (goes by his middle name), & Felix Malcolm. We really like unusual names, but not unheard of. I tend to like odder ones, like Bluebell. yes, I know, it's a cow name. I still love it. My husband hates it, but does like other names like Rook & Frost. Felix was almost Eliot Frost or Malcolm Frost, after the poets..Malcolm after the captain in Firefly. :) Though Solomon, Ulysses, Atticus, & Jerusalem were in there too. Salem Frost sounds like a comic book anti-hero. :)You should see my nameberry lists. I tend to not like the mix & match names, like pick a prefix, add a last name/suffix, & bam-name..i.e. McKenna, Rylan, etc..or the Aiden, Brayden, Jayden names.

KBCsMommy 04-10-2013 07:30 AM

Last summer a little boy named Mason Dash enrolled in my dc. Think "Keeping up with the Kardashians", except definitely NOT a Kardashian!!

I guess the parents couldn't come up with their own unique name

I am so jealous!! I was gonna go for that girl until I started watching one! I know now why God blessed me with boys!:D meant to quote Meeko too!

Brooksie 04-10-2013 09:04 AM

I have a small group and most of the names are pretty basic (Ali, Benjamin, Kaleb, Alex..). But I still hold that my daughter has the best name of the group (lol) Hazel Audrey. When I start trying again, if I have a girl she will be Harley Quinn (I'm a bit of a nerd lol) I also love Finley for a girl. I think I'll be screwed if I have a boy because I have NO boy names on my mind.

Just had to giggle at this because of the coincidence! I know a girl names Tahlia (pronounced the same) and she named her daughter Kaiden!! Except she doesn't pronounce it Kay-den, she pronounces it as its spelled Kai-den. Both very unique names that apparently go well together!

Ryan or Riann was a really popular girls name in our area for awhile. I knew of 4 sibling sets of Ryan and Aaron or Rian and Erin.

Some different/quirky ones I've had:

Girls:
Matilda (I actually Like this one)
Macaulay (I loved this DCG so the name I like! :) )
Odette (DD of a good friend of mine)
Nova Lee
Nevaeh
Frejya
Winslow
Ezre

Boys:
J'sun (aka Jason)
Rogue & Ranger (sib set)
Hunter & Fisher (Twins)
Axel
Wilder
R.G. (Just initials)
Tiberius

I feel weird but I don't really have any favorite baby names  We struggled on a name for DD because all the ones DH liked were names of DCKs I loathed from the past (or their parents!!) I do like Milo for a boy, Not sure on girls but I'm starting to like more 'boy' names like Elliot, Dusty, Ryan, Emmerson...

My dd is Peyton and my ds is Wyatt...if we have a third, I love Holden for a boy and Aubrey for a girl

My favorites are:

Chase, for a girl. Hayden, for a girl. Finley, for a girl.

Guthrie, for a boy. Knox, for a boy.

These are either daycare or children I know/knew that I like:

Kylie (Her middle name was unique, Madsen. It is her mom's maiden name). Her brothers had the same middle name also.
Carly
Niko (full name is Nicholas)
Julianna (granddaughter). I'm not crazy about others calling her Jules though.
Anne (my daughter)
Haylee (I hate the spelling but love the name. I'd spell it Hayley)
Laurel (ahem, stole it for my screen name)

An odd one was Aubrey. I like the name for a girl but this was a boy.

My three adult children are Anthony(Tony), III, Anne Elizabeth, Christopher.

Last year I started watching the Lying Game and really like your name and another character's name in it Sutton.

Haven't had many strange ones. Some faves were
Boys: Chase, Mattox, Parker, Reef, Gatlin, Cylan, Kyree

Girls: I once had a Makenna, McKinnon, Mackinzie, and Kenzie in the same class. There's Neveah, Layla, Katherine (my all time favorite name), Reese (2nd favorite), Macon, and Zaire.

Sunchimes 04-10-2013 04:31 PM

>lately I've heard the boy name "cash" that is just wierd

It is actually a very old timey name. I have 2 ancestors (different branches of family) who were named Cash.

mamac 04-10-2013 06:54 PM

If my second ds had been a girl her name would have been Noelle Elizabeth. We ended up with two boys: Aiden Michael and Mason Leonard. We had NO idea that those names were so popular and that every time we went to the park and called for our kids 10 other little boys would turn around...:lol:

I LOVE Elliot for a girl. I went to college with a girl who wound up naming her daughter Elliette. I love boys names for girls. I love the name Holden, and would consider it for a girl. I also heard Grayson for a girl, but spelled GrEyson. I like that too.

I always thought Jake would be a cute nickname for a girl. It could be short for Jacquelyn, Jacoba, Jacobi, Jakelynn/Jakie-Lynn, or Jakariah (pronounce Jake-arye-ah); it was a joke nickname I had for a guy friend named Jake who used to try to say my name in Spanish but instead of saying "Estrella" he would say it like "Australia". It's pretty much a "Jake" version of Zachariah. It could work as a formal girls name.

I also like Skylar more for a girl (its okay for a boy if his name is Skyler)

I like the idea of Jake for a girl. DCB has girl cousins named Hayden & Channing - and I love those names for girls.

I also like using a mother's maiden name for first names, I have known a :

Miller (girl)
Crawford (boy)
Sutton (girl)
Tennyson (girl) - I'm not too sure about that one. I like it, but seems too long.

My maiden name doesn't really work for that. But I wish it did.

Of course I love my kid's names. Gage is my oldest, he's now an adult and the name has gained popularity but it's not way popular and wasn't when he was a child. Olivia Grace is my oldest daughter, her name wasn't popular either when we choose it but took off and now both her first and middle are usually in the top 10.
I guess we tried harder with the youngest two children, Willow Eve and Xander Kain. So far they are pretty original. Xander was supposed to be Eden Rose until we found out she was a he late in my pregnancy!
A fun fact about my children's, me and the hubby's name is that they are all found in the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. We didn't know this and neither of us has even been a fan. We were asked by several people after our last 2 children if we were fans and had to look it up. Oy!
I also love Isabelle Victoria for a girl.
The most original names I've ever heard were Mara, Taber, Tarkin, Camila and Cash.
I tend to not like boy/girl names that can be shortened but love when girls have names that are usually reserved for boys. I love girly girl names and tough sounding boys names.
I also hate common names but that stems from the fact that my name (first/last and middle) couldn't be any more common and I've had problems because of it. When I went for my first eye appointment I walked in, told them my name and they handed me glasses. I was like, "wow, I thought you guys would have to do an exam!", turns out they do.
Once the federal government was going to garnish my paycheck for not paying someone's student loans. I ended up having to PROVE I wasn't her! I was almost arrested for having a warrant one night after running to the store to get milk and leaving my drivers license behind. Apparently there is a girl in my area with the exact same name, same age and the only difference in our birth date is one number. I have a 8 where she has a 6. I don't like her.

Meeko 04-10-2013 08:49 PM

Cash seems to be a popular one. But I'm afraid it makes me want to ask if he has a sister called Credit.

There is another girl that went to my jr high with my same name and they contacted my mom a couple times about having to replace a laptop that I never returned. I was way out of high school at the time.
Somehow they still had my name in their system.
Still annoied me to this day that they are still picking on me years later!

My favorite girl names have been Niko, Riley, and Delaney. But, I also really liked those girls, so perhaps I liked the name because the kid was so great. I liked the names when I heard them on the phone though.. before ever meeting the child.

I also had a girl named Stormy...but, she was nothing like her name, and it never was right for her.

I have had some boys with unique names, but I love the more traditional names for boys.

If I was having a son, i'd pick Jack, Jake, or Eric.

I had a girl named Tierney, one year. Her sister's name was Kameron.

I dropped them off during the first week of first grade. Kameron's teacher said "I love your names, girls" and Tierney's teacher said "You two have the strangest names, were your parents out of ideas?" I was shocked! Stupid, mean lady.

She spent the whole year picking on Tierney and her name. Kept calling her "Teary" when she cried. "Oh look.. Teary is crying again". (My daughter was in Tierney's class, and told me)

I have a Jack Wyatt(last name), DGD is named Franchesca and you are the only other one I have ever seen spell it with an "h" and another DGD is Charlotte and we call her Charlie.

My son has my favorite boy name - Mitchell and my daughter is - Elizabeth. I just named my youngest DGD Emily McAllister(middle name) and she has three sisters, Whitney, Mackenzie and Franchesca. If my daughter was a boy she would have been Christopher Lyle, another boy favorite.

Some names I don't like because they were names of people mean to me as a child or I didn't like them for some reason or another. Lisa, Sheryl, Gil, Phyllis, Darlene, and Bruce.

:lol::lol: I wouldn't be surprised now days!

My DD is Macy, we really struggled with names but I kept coming back to it. I didn't want something super popular (or a reminder of a someone horrible!) but I didn't want crazy! Although I have one DCP that, even after 9 months with me, always calls her Maisey. I even put a banner up on her bday but no luck !

I have a dcbaby girl named Charli. :)

I know a 5yo named Modesty. I can't stand that name.

I do like this twist on Cash: Cashton

MarinaVanessa 04-11-2013 07:32 AM

None of my DC kids have ever really had any strange or unique names, they've all been pretty common names and spellings.

I wanted to name mt DD something unique so I named her Isis Celeste which translates to goddess of love (and fertility) from heaven. She ignores the "love" and "heaven" part out sometimes and focuses on the goddess part, she's a handful and very much a Diva .

For my DS's name DH and I joked that we'd try something simple and humble in hopes that maybe he'd be more calm compared to his sister and ended up with Alfredo Vicente (Vincent in English) It didn't work

For my next baby we've been thinking about baby names with a first name that starts with A and a middle name that starts with a T and this is what I like:

Alessandro Tomasso (Alessander Tomas in English)
Abram Tay
Alaric Tobiah
Alijah Tyrus
Andres (place name starting with T here)

My youngest so is Sebastian!!! I LOVE that name!!!

I just have to say I got excited when I saw you post "nonna" I'm Sicilian and we call our grandparents "nonna" and "nonno" lol. Hope you don't honk I'm weird lol.

My first few daycare kids had some STRANGE names:

Tanna
Felicity
Layton
Andrea pronounced And -raya
Calvin
Zari

Another name we are considering is Cyrus for a boy.

Lol we're Sicilian too. My cousin's son calls my aunt and uncle Nonna and Nonnu. But it's kinda confusing because my Nonna lives with them and she has Alzheimer's so when he calls for his Nonna, Big Nonna thinks he is calling for her. My mom wants to be called Nonna too but when I have grandkids I want to be called "Nonni" so that there isn't as much confusion (it also sounds younger). Lol that's a good Idea for another thread: Nicknames for Grandparent!

Live and Learn 04-13-2013 11:16 AM

Someone touched on this already but I'm soooo over the Aiden, Hayden, Payton, Brayden, Kaiden, Drayden, Graydon, Jayden, Layton, craze. Our oldest (18) is named one of these. It is a family name on two sides of our family and about a decade ago the popularity exploded on the west coast for these names. I feel sorry for all of the kids in the same classroom with all of their rhyming names. Reminds me of that song or band name....what was it? 27 Jennifer's or something? They are nice names but so over done now. The older I get the mor sentimental I get for ancestral names with not made up spellings. Just me.

:)Congrats to the pregnant Mommies.:)

I have a DCM who is pregnant with a girl...maybe Harper. I love it!

I loved the name Harper, but I worry now that Victoria Beckham used it - that it will be everywhere. There are already 2 girls I went to HS with who named daughters Harper. But I LOVE LOVE LOVE the name !

I got a call for daycare today--- kiddos are Kennedy and Reagan.

Presidential? I only have one opening though.

Snowbunny 04-13-2013 02:49 PM

How about Nash, Jayan, Seona, and Quinn?

I have had both those names (actually two different Reagans) but from separate families. I used to love both names, and both kids ruined them for me.

The mom I nanny for just had a baby girl named Hailey. But I'm not sure how she spells it yet because they have a son named Aedan so IDK if they are going to spell it traditionally or one of the many new ways.

I actually heard that names supposedly do really effect one's personality, even their politics. Supposedly those named Kennedy tend to be more liberal and those named Reagan tend to be more conservative.

My grandsons have a cousin named Sunshine, one named Summer and one named Gunnar...all same family.

I have a Chaselyn (girl) here because her mom has 3 other girls and didn't have a boy to name Chase (her maiden name) so she added Lyn on to the end so her name wouldn't be taken as a boy's name.

I've had an Xavier, a Maddax, a Tiffany, Gage (which I thought was very unusual at the time), his brother named Dayton, and my newest little one starting in the fall is Brantley...

I have a girl Chase, and it is one of my favorite names out of all the dc kids I have had.

Brantley seems on trend with what others were talking about before. Adding -len or -ley to a name to make it unique.

GrannyJ 04-13-2013 08:18 PM

I have a dc girl named Aribella. I think that is so pretty but she goes by Bella.

I like boys name for girls also, I named my dd Danielle and called her Danie until she was old enough to tell me she didn't like it.

So now I name my dogs my favorite names, all girls:
Chloe
Lily
Charlie-a girl

My grandson is Maximilian goes by Max
My other grandson is Dru Espn yes his father is a sports fanatic! I thought he was joking when he told me what he chose for a middle name.

I had a friend who said her dad wanted to name her Danielle and call her "Danni" for short and she said she's glad her parents didn't name her that because she would hate to be called "Danni" but yet there was a little girl at her mom's daycare named Danica that she would always call "Danni".

MyAngels 04-13-2013 10:19 PM

I must live in the boring capitol of the world because the most unusual names I could come up with were George and Everett. I know they're not "unusual" per se, but how often do you see them nowadays?

My own three kids have very common names, and my DD even had a girl in her high school with her same exact name, first middle and last. Talk about confusing.

My DH had a guy in town who had his name, first and last, too. Imagine our surprise when we began getting concerned calls on the day when the other guy's death notice appeared in the paper :).

MyNana23 04-14-2013 06:44 AM

I think that my new little guy named Brantley might be because of the young country singer, Brantley Gilbert...the baby's Dad used to come to my daycare when he was a baby so I've kept in touch over the years..when I heard the name I kind of cringed...LOL! Not a fan of the singer or the name.. :)

My dh's distant cousin (with the same last name) called his son the same first name as my dh and they don't live far away...so far we haven't had any problems with mail., etc. but he is still a teen so who knows if in the future?

My cousin married a girl with my first name and because his last name is the same as my maiden name, this girl now has my original name...LOL!

There is also a woman with the same first name and she married someone with the same last name as my married name ..she lived in the area for awhile and we got each other's mail, Sears was always calling me with HER order, and one time, she actually called me about daycare..when she said her name, I thought she was being a smartass...LOL!

Anyone reading this will immediately know who I am... but that's okay!

My two children have my favorite names of course
Disclaimer: They are NOT named after the places!

Phoenix & Aspen

My DD: Aspen Monét (Aspen= determined Monét=to be heard)
The name SO fits!

My DS: Phoenix Xavier (From Act 27:12 = protection from the storm)
You must read the whole passage to understand, but basically the sea was stormy, the seasons were changing and they were searching for a city named Phoenix to winter in because their harbor wasn't safe)

Fav Girl:
Avi (av-ee)

Fav Boy:
Harper
