Dear Wealthy DCM Vent....

Dear wealthy dcm,

I would just like to tell you that I too find all the little dresses and matching outfits you dress your DD in beautiful and yes we are all aware that you have the money to be able to dress your child from head to toe in Children's Place attire on a daily basis however, if you had any idea how ridiculous your DD looks right now running around my backyard trying to keep up with the other kids wearing that red pea coat with matching hat and high heels you would reconsider how you dress your child for play.
Seriously, some things are better kept for church and holidays......
What the heck is wrong with a windbreaker, sneakers and jeans?

Lucy 04-03-2012 04:42 PM

YES!! And she probably expects her to come home as clean as new. If you do a newsletter, put in a reminder that they may get dirty, so dress appropriately. And also that you are not responsible for stains.

MsMe 04-03-2012 04:44 PM

I don't have any that dress like that, but I certainly wouldn't hold her back from any messy activities.....if you know what I mean ;):ouch:

cheerfuldom 04-03-2012 05:02 PM

Its worse when you have one that wears head to toe Gymboree, matching socks and hair things included. Each days outfit is well over $100 retail.

Meyou 04-04-2012 03:13 AM

I just let them get dirty anyway. :ouch: Then I tell Mom or Dad point blank at pickup that we need PLAY clothes tomorrow as I hand over their filthy child.

OH! You need a nice mud pit for the kids to play in!

SunshineMama 04-04-2012 04:19 AM

Maybe she shops at consignment and TJ Maxx? I put my dd's in beautiful expensive (looking) clothing, but I buy it at mom's sales for a few bucks, or TJ Maxx and Marshalls. It looks like I spend a ton but I actually spend less than Target prices. Maybe that mom does the same??

Kaddidle Care 04-04-2012 04:42 AM

I wouldn't worry about it. She'll learn... eventually... maybe... hehe!:p The outfit sounds adorable! So long as you've warned them that you all play outdoors, paint, play with shave cream, etc., (hopefully already in your handbook) you're covered.

The shoes would be the main issue with me. Children need propery footwear for outdoor play.

My daughter was my third child who is much younger than her 2 older brothers. While I enjoyed shopping for my boys (I love any kind of shopping, even the grocery store ), I absoluted LOVED shopping for my baby girl. She is the oldest girl or the same age as the other girls in my family and among my friends so we had no hand me downs. I shopped almost exclusively at Gymboree and a little at Children's Place...never paid full price cuz there is always a sale or coupons. ;) So, my daughter would always look like she was wearing her "good" clothes to play. Actually, ALL her clothing was new looking (with a little bit of eBay finds in the mix) so her play clothes were, too, including shoes. I just had here wear my least favorites to play. I was big on stain sticking everything, too...I have since gotten over that. :D So, evenitually, she would have some clothing that looked a bit more worn, but, at the beginning of the season, you would have thought I was dressing her for a party. :D

countrymom 04-04-2012 05:55 AM

acually I find stuff from the children's place cheap, they always have things on sale. I have stuff from there for my kids and its acually cheaply made when you look at stuff from gymbo. But gymbo always has leggings on sale for 5 dollars so my dd has so many of them (this girl never wears jeans and she's 7.5yrs old) I shop at thrift stores and mom sales too. My kids (they are older) have brand name stuff and you would never guess that I paid a fraction of the price. Now, she sounds like a girly girl type of child, and trust me, I have one too, she prefers to wear cowboy boots with a skirt and leggings, or a dress every day, yet she will still climb the tree and play in the mud in them too, she's so funny to watch. Oh the other day she wore a pink cowboy hat too because they matched her boots.

That's my thinking too. Wear what you want, as long as it is warm or cool enough for the weather. If it gets dirty, hey. Not my problem. But the shoe thing would really bother me. I don't even think I'd let the child run around in heeled shoes. That's a broken ankle ready to happen.

kayla 04-04-2012 06:54 AM

My favorite store for my child is once apon a child.... There stuff is gently used and I can go in and buy tons of name brands for cheap... love love love it!!

Jewels 04-04-2012 07:02 AM

I get a lot of stuff from childrens place, and spend less than stuff at target, Its a fairly cheap store, and they have super cheap sales. I must say I always strive to dress my own daughter super nice, in super cute clothes, and when they get dirty I really don't care, I wash them......And everyday the shoes my 2 almost 3 yr old picks out are her easter shoes from last year, with the little heal on them, I usually switch for the sandals if I catch it, but she always picks the other ones, and to me its a battle not worth fighting, If those are the shoes she wants to wear, whatever. I am fully aware she will get everything dirty, but I am also fully aware it is all washable.

renodeb 04-04-2012 07:14 AM

I used to have a mom like that, when I first met her I thought that she was very upidty (sp?) but as I got to know her I found out that she bought all of her little girls clothing from ebay for a steal. And that when she outgrows stuff that she sells it on ebay as well. She knew which brands sell for the most money. She really only got sad at one thing getting ruined when we discovered that babyfood peaches stain. Other than that she did not mind if Miss A got dirty! I have in my contract that kids need to wear appropriate play clothes. Also at interview I always bring up that play clothes are best, not the brand new outfit from grandma.

Now if we want to talk expensive clothes, Janie and Jack (or other way around....can't remember) has outfits for well over $100 each. Not to mention, most of their clothes are light colored (I immediately think of all the stains).

Bkind 04-04-2012 07:55 AM

I agree

i have so had this happen and yes the parent wanted them to stay clean for school. when we r going out to play in the morning prior to pm school pick-up just crazy with mulch and muddy backyard. this was the reason i now make it very clear to my parents this is really not the place for this and most times this will in fringe on the child's ability to play at the same level as if they didn't have these things on. just knowing what is normally expected from the child when they r wear these clothes. i also make it very clear i am not in anyway going to be responsible for paint, mud, or other kids who spill things on their child and i will in no way encourage or discourage the child in keeping nice and neat my job is first to keep their child safe and encourage them to learn, explore, communicate, be kind, have manners is just some things but limited to but not make sure we stay prim and proper.

We have two out here and I love the bag sales!! Stuff a bag full for $5!! I love that place but I wouldn't sale my children's clothes to them bc they won't pay you much. Not even store credit. Best is ebay or craigslist. :)

countrymom 04-04-2012 08:23 AM

if you think childrens place is brand name, wow, wait till your kids are older. Mine wear tommy, hurley, abrocombie,dc,bench, lululemon. And all that stuff I get for really cheap. The bench stuff is hand me downs (who pays 80 dollars for a hoodie) the hurly dress, I bought for 10 dollars at costco this week, its such a perfect cotton summer dress, the other stuff I buy on sale or thrift stores. I'm finding that childrens place stuff is being made smaller and smaller and cheaper in quality, sure they have cute stuff, but when I buy a shirt I expect it not to shrink and fade on the first wash. My 7 yr old wears stuff that are size 10 and up from that store (in shirts) because they are so small. this drives me crazy, lucky she has sisters so she wears their stuff.

sharlan 04-04-2012 08:34 AM

What difference does it make where the mom buys the kid's clothes? As long as you don't pay for them, it's really not your concern.

The only issue I would have would be the shoes. Have the mom leave a pair of play shoes there.

Soccermom 04-04-2012 08:34 AM

Children's place is about the only store we have nearby where you can buy children's clothes...we are in the middle of nowhere. lol! I am about 45 minutes outside of town and there are about 3 stores where you can buy kids clothes in that small town. That's why this kid kinda stands out too. She is playing among rough and tough get dirty country kids. (They moved here recently to get away from city life.)

My issue isn't the fact that dcm dresses her kids in full priced or sale clothes. I don't care how much $ she dished out for the outfits really. I am more concerned about her clothes being completely inappropriate for outdoor play. Send the kid some outdoor shoes and a real coat for playtime. The poor kid gets completely left out of play because she can't keep up and she has actually asked to borrow a pair of my DD's rubbers and a real hat before. Plus she'll come shivering at the door 15 minutes after they have all gone outside wanting to come back in. I've told mom that play clothes and outdoor clothes are essential but it doesn't seem to ring a bell...I just find it kinda funny I guess to watch her out in the woods picking up sticks in her fancy get up.

MamaBearCW 04-04-2012 08:37 AM

Play clothes

I seen a woman looking at the thrift store for play clothes. She was telling me they were for daycare. She did not want to have to worry about her "nice" clothes. I told her, that I know her daycare provider would appreciate that. She was buying nice things, just not costly things. Nothing like the parent who has to go somewhere after work bringing thier child in thier finest. Bring it in a bag. You can change her in the restroom when you pick her up. Or if no time, I will change them.

I have two moms who dress their child in louis vuitton and Juicy. Even other labels that cost more.

I only tell parents once and that is in the interview. Don't send your child in clothing that you expect to be kept clean. Here we play and we play with everything and anything that is safe. This includes bugs, mud and paint!

Last week, one mom sent her little girl in her Easter outfit to show it off. I think the mom had to go and buy a new one. It was farm day that day and lets just say the only ones that really enjoyed her dress that day was the goats. They actually ate off some of the tooling......

I don't care where you shop or what you can afford. Clothes are just that clothes....

Sugar Magnolia 04-04-2012 09:46 AM

I would add this: Dear wealthy patents, please do not teach your child to.ridicule other.children who do not have nice clothes. I have heard things like 1. "those are from Walmart, you're poor." 2. "my shoes are Nike and yours aren't". 3. " my dress is prettier than yours, because mine was expensive." And 4. "your clothes are ugly, why doesn't your mommy buy you new ones?" Yes, 4 and 5 year olds said those things. I am pretty confident their parents taught them expensive vs. cheap snarkiness. SAD.

I live in the country too. We always joke around that "you know you live in the country when everyone in your family owns rubber boots" You should send her home one day in clothes that are completely covered in mud, then see what she says.

This made me SO chuckle about my own kids. Do you know where my 16 year old son insists on buying his school clothes?

Tractor supply. :rolleyes::lol:

MissK 04-04-2012 10:24 AM

Pretty sure ths point of the post was that the child wasn't dressed appropriately for play - not necessarily where she bought the clothing. Though she mentioned that it wasn't really the heart of the post. I agree that children should not come to daycare in clothes that need to be kept spotless or hinder their ability to move and play with the other kiddos. I'd personally keep a pair of tennis shoes at the house for her - don't feel bad little one...I can't run in heels either ;) lol

EntropyControlSpecialist 04-04-2012 10:45 AM

My whole family wears nice, expensive clothing that I paid a fraction for. Secondhand and big sales are fantastic.

Proper footwear is a big deal. It's hard to learn and explore in uncomfortable shoes. Maybe you can send a memo home on the importance of proper footwear.

EntropyControlSpecialist 04-04-2012 10:50 AM

(As for older children preferring pricier clothing ... simply not true over here.
My nearly 16-year-old could not care less what brand his clothing is. It's Mama Bear that cares since he is so rough on his clothing and I want it to LAST. Thankfully, I am able to find the "expensive brands" for a couple of dollars.)

I love to dress up my daughter. I shop Children's Place because it is cheap and not bad quality, and fun bright colors. I fully expect her to get dirty, play and have fun in her clothes. Clothes wash. Kiddo's wash too. I don't do heals- that is a joke, and yes should be saved for Sunday Best or whatever. My kid is stylin while having fun. I have outlets too and I never pay full price unless I totally love love love something. You can't beat Children's Place socks. The ones with the rubber on the bottom to avoid slidy rides across the floor. I also do consignment, garage sales, tj maxx and shop sales. The mark up on clothing is so high it makes sense to shop sales- I would rather have a parent frill out the child then not care and send them dirty. I do get what your saying--- heals.......lol

hit a yard sale and pick up what she needs for pocket change and keep it at care. I have had to do this. I don't like it, but when your knocking your head against the pavement......its the best answer I have come up with for solving this problem.

EntropyControlSpecialist 04-05-2012 11:10 AM

Can you, maybe, ask her Mom to leave a pair of tennis shoes in her cubby for outdoor time play?
