Transitioning From Crib To Mat?

I'm sure this topic has been discussed, but having trouble finding past posts. I have a two year old who has been showing some interest in napping on a mat, especially now that I have a 3.5 year old who comes once a week and naps on a mat. (Until now, 2 year old was the oldest.)

The trouble seems to be actually making it happen. Right now, he naps in a very dark room in the basement, but I'd like kids on mats to be on the living room floor where I can keep an eye on them while I do paperwork, clean the kitchen, etc. We tried today, and I gave him an hour before I gave up and brought him back down to his crib. He rolled around, inspected bookcases, tried to talk to me, sang along with the nap music, anything to avoid sleeping. I brought him downstairs and he was asleep in five minutes.

How have others done this?

Here is a similar link. I have also enabled SIMILAR THREADS at the bottom of each page. I think this is a neat option and will provide a a lot of great information that otherwise would have taken time to search.

I recently moved by dcg from pnp to mat. It took a couple of weeks for it to work. She did the same thing and I sat by her until she fell asleep. (She was the only one not in a pnp at the time). Now, most days, she gets down her mat and goes to sleep. We still have a day like last Friday, when she didn't sleep. She rolled and fidgeted and talked and whined for 45 minutes. At that point, I let her up to play. Mom dropped her off late and it messed up our nap schedule, so I wasn't too concerned about it.

Just be patient. He will catch on soon.
