Lunch Meat on Food Program

I'm trying to find out if there are any good brands of lunch meat (turkey or ham) that do not contain by-products, cereal, or extenders. I'd like to add a lunch meat sandwich to my menu next week and this is the first time serving it while on the food program. I looked in my Credit Book and it lists that lunch meat can't contain any of that stuff.

Is it hard to find good products without those things in places like Wal-Mart or Kroger?

I don't know of any. What I do is cook a ham or turkey and slice it thin enough for a deli sandwich, freeze it for later, thaw and use.

Butterfly, are all of those safe to use, then? Honestly, I look at all of those numbers and I go cross eyed

Luv - that sounds amazing and I'm going to have to try that when the weather cools down.

I never knew that we could only serve certain lunch meats! Oopsies, We don't have lunch meat very often, but I've been giving them whatever I buy!

It's probably different for different programs. Hot dogs also fall under the category of no by products, cereals, or extenders for my sponsor. Honestly, when I do serve hot dogs I just buy one that says 100% beef and pray they don't come on that day because I have no idea if that's the right thing. :o

Yes. These are all creditable. It states how many slices needed for a serving for each age group. But I do as PP stated about slicing real meat thin. Easier than shopping for certain brands and counting slices....

Try going to sdstate.edu/tll/frn/cacfp.cfm and click on the link to the right that says updated child nutrition labels. Hopefully that will be easier to read.

We buy Hormel Natural Choice because there's no nitrates/nitrites.
