The Battle of the Why’s!

What are your tricks to get the question “why” to stop after everything you say?
Ex:
Me: We don’t bring our drinks into the living room.
DCK: Why?
Me: It can make a mess,
That is the rule,
Ignore the question... which then creates a why why why why until it’s answered,
Stop asking me why, this is just what we do.

This particular kid is 3 and asks why for everything and it’s been going on for months no matter what I do. Now she has a 2 year old on board and they also ask why after I ask them to do something.

It’s driving me insane! 😝😝

Turn the question back around to them. When they ask you why you do X,Y,Z, ask them why they think you do X,Y,Z. It gets them thinking about the way things work, and it also stops some of the why questions because it is no fun when the teacher no longer plays along.

I'm old school and my method for managing this is:

Me: We don’t bring our drinks into the living room.
DCK: Why?
Me: Because I said so.

DCK: Why?
Me: Because I said so.

DCK: But why?
Me: Go play

DCK: But wwhhhhhhyyyy?
Me: *crickets*

DCK: Why?
Me: *crickets*

Blackcat’s method a LOTS of patience!! My DCB that does this is anxious/OCD but I finally broke him of this habit.

He also says “what”? After everything I say so now I just say “you heard me” then ignore. Its funny how every single time he actually did hear me

I usually say "not why, just yes ma'am." It works pretty well.

I say "You mean ok, Myname."

If it's a serious why, like the kids asking why the snow melted, I'm all on it. We have an ongoing experiment outside with two snow piles. One in the sun and one in the shade.

When they do the why game I answer with "whycuz"

Sing it with me.

"Why cuz I love ya
Why cuz you love me and
I
think you're awful sweet
Why because I love you."

Well you gotta be there to see how it works. My singing gets on their very last nerve pretty quickly. :p
