IMO, if they are capable of remorse then they would have enough morality to not commit the crime. They didn't snap. This wasn't "in the heat of the moment". This was done over time and they were fully aware of their actions and they also knew the consequences, hence the lies and attempted coverup.

When they get to prison they will probably be put in isolation or segregated with other child killers. But this doesn't guarantee their safety because the guards are infamous for telling the inmates who the child molesters/killers are.
