I don't tolerate any sort of violence in my home (your poor daughter!!) so at this age I would implement some kind of punishment to fit the crime. Ususally I get to their level, hold their shoulders and really scold them assertively. I don't scream at them obviously but I make sure they know I mean business. I will simply say "stop hitting". He seems to know what he is doing if he is waiting for certain opportunities to carry it out.

If this didn't work the second time I did it I would implement a punishment. A few minutes in his bed or taking away a beloved toy....something to get it throigh to him that this is not acceptable behavior. Most of the time this continues because no one has been firm enough with the child. 99% of the time I use a stern voice the kid never hits again! I would also make sure to try and avoid the situations where he hits as well.
