My response would have been "No, but you can take it back outside where it belongs." Simple, short, direct, no apology.
Nip it in the bud, as it happens, every time, and life becomes easier. 
I am such a dork....I could not stand up for myself if my life depended on it. Even when things happen outside of daycare I still don't.
