Why don't you test the waters first by opening a small daycare and have only your wife work while you still keep your current job? After 1 year of running small daycare if you are full and if you manage to build a waiting list for your daycare apply for large license. Only once you manage to get your large daycare full I would consider quiting current job. Opening preschool or child care center in CA is whole another beast. If you successfully manage to navigate through managing small and then large daycare, next steps will be clear to you from that point on. I would say if at all possible keep your business as family operated business for as long as you can without employees. Part-time assistant would be the most I would consider bcs as soon you hire someone outside the family you will be giving up a large portion of your income.
