I have a 4 1/2 yo old who has been potty trained for quite some time. This family does not come in the summer. When they returned in September, he had some wetting issues (not stopping play to use the bathroom, wetting at nap time, etc) During that time I was giving him reminders throughout the day to use the bathroom. I felt though after a couple weeks of doing this that I didn’t want him relying on me telling him to use the bathroom instead of listening to his body and him going when he needed to go. At that point, I told him it was now his job to decide when he had to go because only he knows when his body is alerting him to go. That worked and he has been fine up until yesterday. For the last two days now he has gone back to wetting himself and continuing to play, eat, do art, etc. until I see that he is wet. I reminded him yesterday that it is his job the use the bathroom when he feels the need to go. This morning, he was playing on the floor and I noticed that his whole back side was wet! Ugh!! Do I return to giving him reminders throughout the day?
With older kids who have been potty trained for a long time, the only times I have them use the bathroom is before and after nap. If they need to go at other times, they tell me and go to the bathroom.
