I had a college professor tell me that it is a diminishing term. I don't think it is, so I still use it.
When I say, "Hey kids, let's…." It is usually light hearted and something fun that they will want to do. If I say, "Children…" Well, it's akin to using a full name… they rarely like what's coming next!
