Don't panic! ;-) I got my first child on care.com. She's been here for 17 months and I have her infant brother now too.
Just to show that sometimes it doesn't matter if your house isn't ready, I'll tell you my experience. I had a few toys for older kids-nothing for babies or young toddlers because I wasn't going to take babies. Time went by with no kids-not even any interviews. Finally, late one evening, I got a call from someone needing care at 5 or 5:30 the next morning, for an infant. My finances required that I take this offer, but I told her I didn't have anything for a baby, and I really didn't know much about babies. She said she would loan me a pnp and we'd learn about babies together. And we did.
I'm on my 4th baby-3 are still with me and not babies anymore. Sometimes casual or not quite ready can work out just fine.
