Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>Signing Children In And Out On Touchscreen (Ipad)?
dreambeliever 12:07 AM 10-01-2012
I have an ipad and I was hoping to use it to help track a lot of the paperwork for the business. Use less paper, have info at our fingertips, impress clients and all that jazz. Unfortunately, finding the right app has been a NIGHTMARE! I have probably thrown away 24 hours of my life and probably a solid $10 trying to find the right one. I am thinking now that I would have saved time by figuring out how to create my OWN app! I mean seriously, how hard can it be to have THESE features in a simple app:
- Childrens names you can tap on to add them to the sign in sheet,
- The times be automatically added when you tap on their name,
- a signature field next to their name for the parent or employee to sign them in (I run an afterschool program so I'd sign them in).

- Then there would be a place for the sign-out that would add the time,
- and also have a signature field for the parent.

Badaboom.. you have in easy sign in sheet. If it could generate reports or export data that would be even better. I'd be willing to spend money for something like this because every other option either doesn't include a signature field (which come on, how hard would it be with a touchscreen), doesn't include a place to add the time, forces you to type in the child's name every day (Ain't nobody got time for that!), or just doesn't have a "Save" function so as soon as you leave the screen.. it's all gone!

'm angry.. at somebody, I don't know who. I guess app developers in general. We don't need anymore mind numbing, time sucking games just give us daycare directors something we can USE! I even looked into procare because I was sure that softwar with that high of a pricetag would have an app or something you could use.. but no.. they want you to buy their 1k touchscreens! Ridiculous.

So.. I'll continue using my paper version which by the end of the week is nearly shredded because I have to stuff it into my bag so often (our afterschool program migrates often inside the rec facilities). Parents end up signing in the "time" field half the time or our pens stop working.. you know, it's just a pain to use! Thanks for hearing me vent, and if you have any suggestions of something I overlooked, I love you I love you I love you!!

OP, have you looked into www.checkinkids.com?

I've been using this program for almost 1.5 years. I run the program on my tablet that's located near the front entrance of my playroom. Parents sign in and out easily using their phone numbers, and I can print/view time sheets when I need.

It's reduced the amount of paper I go through with everything being online. I believe the program is still free and it's a lifetime subscription.

I've never been more happier with a single program (besides MMK ). It's made my life so much easier.

Definitely worth a try. HTH!

LOL! I just posted this same thing on the OP's other thread. The rep for Check in Kids used to frequent the forum but I haven't seen him here in a while. Sounded like a really useful and helpful program and looked VERY easy to use.

I thought seriously about switching over to it but I get MMK for free so I am not really motivated to change at this time.

yes, wasn't the developer of checkin kids a member here?? I was going to give it a try but decided I don't want to keep my ipad near my entrance and I think I remember it worked well for open to close hours but not as well if you run on contracted hours (in regard to late fees, etc.).

My sign in sheets are in a 3 ring binder by my front door - I prefer paper to electronic for that type of thing. At the end of the year I have them all in one spot!

ETA: I was obviously typing the same time as BlackCat, LOL!

My husband wrote a touchscreen program for me . The main screen has headshots of each of the kids. The parent taps the pic and the screen goes to that child's pic with two options: "Sign In" and "Cancel". When they tap "sign in", it automatically goes back to the main screen for the next child. At pick up time, the screen is the same with "Sign Out" instead. Easy Peasy!

The server logs the times so I can print them whenever. It's so easy! The only problem is our flakey router, so sometimes the connection times out. It takes about 20 seconds to refresh and then it's good to go again.

Because I'm legally unlicensed, there are no requirements for attendance and I don't have to have signature fields. I also have very little need for security, so having the kids' pics is good enough.

I'm sure OP would have more requirements, but it can be done! And yes, it really does impress the parents, big time!

DBug, if he added a signature field to the program and sold it for a buck, I'm sure he'd make a lot! I can't find ANYTHING that simply tracks three things.. student name, time and signature. Shouldn't be so hard!

I would LOVE this! He should really make it into an app!

That is amazing. We just set everything up. We will be using it on an iPad/Laptop each day now.

I used checkinkids.com on my laptop and I love not having the sign in sheets floating around everywhere. It also helps me keep track of the late fees and looks so much more professional. I haven't had a single problem with it.

I use check in kids too... I love it. It does my late fees automatically and it's just plain easy to use.

I just signed up for this and I must say I'm SO glad this thread was revived! I've been looking for something JUST like this! It's a breeze to use as well. I use MMK for EVERYTHING, but I like that the time tracker automatically generates the fees and the parent clocks in themselves so there is no discussion about what time they arrived and the report prints it right out. Thanks so much for sharing

I signed up for checkinkids also...love it so far, except I forgot to use it this morning...what do you do then? This would have been my first day. Can you go in and change or add a time that is different than what shows on the clock?

I haven't figured out a way to CHANGE the time, however I would recommend clocking the child in or out once you remember and then put a note in the system. To do this, go to 'My Account Administration' >> List Children >> Post a message regarding this child. Type the date and time they actually clocked in. It will allow both you and the parent to see it and then when you print the timesheet for that week (or month/ w/e you prefer) you can notate it on the report. The message will stay in the system until you delete it or update it to say something else. I did send a 'contact us' message to inquire about that feature bc it would be helpful in the case there was a clock in/out issue.

HTH!!

Unfortunately, DBug has not signed into the forum since December of last year.

I use Kinderlime. The sign in function is date and time stamped. It allows for a pin sign in or physical signature with a stylus and keeps an indefinite history of sign in/out. Parents can also set it to notify them when a child is picked up or dropped off. I think that's a safety feature to make sure nobody forgets about junior.

I am exploring all of the apps for signing students in to meet bright from the start standards. Has anyone used procare? They say they are free. I also found kinderline which is $2.50/student each month which is out of our budget. My kidzday is $1.50/student each month which isn't terrible. What about this virtueclock.com that seems like it used to be checkinkidz.com does anyone know how they charge? Any other ones i should check out?
