So long story short: my 3 y.o. takes lessons once a week and we've been having some behavior issues. As a reward for obeying the instructor and getting himself under control I took him to the local bakery and let him choose a pastry for himself, something he greatly enjoys. I also bought a donut for each of the dck that would be here when we returned just for a special treat. (It was ok with their parents.) Anyway, I hand dcg a pink donut, which is her favorite color, and she instantly complains that she wants the one my son chose. I said, "Well, he earned that one for a job well done today, & I bought this one for you b/c its your favorite color. It's just a special treat." She continues whining in a high pitched voice, "Well, actually chocolate is my favorite. Not pink." Again she asked for his treat. I again told her to eat her own. Then she said, "It doesn't even have sprinkles on it!" I'd had it at that point so I said, "Either stop complaining and eat the donut I gave you, or go play and do without. I don't care which." So she takes about 4 bites and gets down all the while pouting.
Then today, I gave the kids each a curly straw with a princess on it for something fun. She exclaims, "You gave me Rapunzel! Thank you!" About a minute later she realizes another child has Cinderella so the whining is back, "But I like Cinderella! Why can't I have the Cinderella?" What ever happened to just saying thank you when someone does something nice for you? She's 4. I would think that is old enough to not throw a fit whenever you don't get your way. Ugh. I again said, "If you complain again I will take the Rapunzel straw away and you can use a normal straw." The pout is back.

"Oh,I'm so sorry you don't like your donut, let me throw that away for you." Done while smiling.
"Oh,I'm so sorry you dont like your straw, let me go ahead and take that so I can give it to another little girl who will appreciate it"
At that age she is old enough to learn manners and that the correct response is "Thank you" Anything else will result in it being taken away!
Tell her, when someone gives you something it is polite to say thank you,if you don't like it or want it the correct response is no thank you.
I can't stand rude children and tell them when they are being rude.
Big pet peeve of mine!!!

I learned a long time ago to get identical items for a group. Saves a lot of grief over a lifetime. They still must be polite and say thank you.

I'm sorry, but this reminds me of the spoiled girl, Veruca Salt, from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

"I want the world, I want the whole world."

You can sing this song in response to her:

Pampered and spoiled like a Siamese cat
Blaming the kids is a lie and a shame
You know exactly who's to blame

The mother and the father

You will live in happiness too

"You get what you get and you don't throw a fit"

As soon as the fit starts, I say this. If they don't immediately stop, the treat goes away.

I would have totally eaten the donut too

Love this saying!

I once had twins at a center that I worked at. One was one of my favorite children and she used to say that all the time to her sister or other kids and then smile. Every time I say that, I think of her.

"you get what you get and you don't get upset" was a daily saying at my house when my own son was about 4 years old. Sometimes its just a stage they go thru but sometimes they really need the lesson in being thankful for what they have.
