Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>Probation Letter Sound Okay?

How does this sound for a probation letter? I have been wavering on terming or trying this. DCB is huge ball of energy. All of the kids feed off of him. He cannot sit still at all ever (except at nap when he is sleeping). He is always moving some part of his body. When I tell him if you continue _____ then I will need to put it back on the shelf. Which happens a lot and then he throws a tantrum and when I remove him to our "quiet" space to calm down which is next to my stairs he will climb them and jump off. If I put him on the floor by the wall - he will start fight kicking things like the garbage, etc. I can't sit him at the table because he will keep falling off his chair on purpose. I feel I have no where to put him to take a "break". I also feel like I'm constantly talking to him - please stop kicking ____ under the table, Hitting _____ with blocks, Throwing _____. I made a spot for him to do his fight kicking so others don't get hurt but he refuses to go there so I'm constantly telling him to do that and he will argue he doesn't want to. I feel like I'm reminding him so many times a day or moving him once he starts wrecking kids "creations" from his kicking, etc. I'm tired just typing this.

Anyways...how does below sound. He is 3y old BTW.

Dear __________,
Due to continuation of DCB’s continuous disruption and behavior, as of Friday, March 14th, your contract with ******** will be placed on a probation status. This probation period will last two weeks, until March 28th, 2014.

I do my best to try different techniques with children but I also know I cannot be the right fit for every family or child. The goal in the next two weeks is to improve DCB’s behavior and listening skills at *********. I need to be available to all of the kids here and when forced to give most of my attention to one child it is not fair to the others or myself. I feel redirection and other behavior modification techniques I have tried are not currently working but I will continue to try. If I do not feel like there has been adequate improvement, I will have no choice but to terminate our contract.

Another childcare setting with more teachers and space DCB may excel where he is struggling here. If you feel it is in his best interest for you to find another provider please let me know. If you feel ********* is still the best place for him I hope we can work together with DCB to see some improvement.

Thank you,
*******

I feel as though DCB might thrive better in a daycare with additional teachers and more space than I can offer here. <===what I would sub the third paragraphs first sentence with.

It sounds good. I would be more than happy to e-mail you the behavior plan of action I use when I run into situations like this (twice...one suspende then termed, other is still here!).

Good! You could be more specific about what improvements you want to see:

No further incidents of kicking or hitting others.
No further incidents of throwing toys or damaging other children's creations
Staying in chair at lunch time.

That way, parents know exactly what to work with him on, and if you have to term you can say... "He hit 5 times, refused to stay in his chair on these days" and so on.

Yes, good idea. I do this in mine. It shows EXACTLY what needs to improve.

I like the addition of what you are trying to fix and how you are going to go about fixing it. I might add that during this time you expect parents to fully support the new resolution strategies at home as well, working together as a team. If they have any input that could help resolve these issues, you would love to further discuss it with them.

I have done the probation once and it was for 30 days. I didn't think the kid I had would change much in two weeks. It did take all 30 days for me to make my final decision. I did keep the child, he is still here. We still struggle sometimes, but it is MUCH MUCH better now that I have both parents on board with me.

Oh goodness, I have a little girl just like that! Except she's a smart sneaky one so she'll wait til the second your back is turned. I could never term tho cuz she was a foster kid when I first got her at 4 months and she's 2 now.

I think your letter is great. I wouldn't be able to write one that sounded professional like that, kudos to you.

Thanks everyone. Found out mom is getting married this weekend and then grandma will bring him next week while they are honeymoon. I will hold off on the prob. Letter until end of month. I did talk to mom about his behavior this week and maybe some has to do with most likely being super busy with wedding stuff I'm sure his schedule is off some. Hopefully I will not need the letter but we shall see since these are not new problems just became more frequent though out the day. I will be keeping this letter either way for future.

Well I hope he's not all whacked out next week at grandma's house, totally out of his element!
