Does hiring an assistant mean you can take in more children?

What would you guys think of me hiring a 16 year old to be my assistant just for the summer? How would that work? It would be my son who has been a cam counselor and is great with the kids.
He is trying to be a counselor again this year - but might not be able to because they are having budget cuts in our rec department.

Normally I'm allowed 6 full time and 3 part time
but in the summer it is ONLY 6 full time so those three part timers are screwed. I'm just wondering if having a summer assistant would allow me more kids for the summer months.? And ajob for my son

It depends on your state regs. In MI, as a family home we can only have 6 period. If i went to a group home, I could have 12 but then I would have to have an assistant any time there were more than 6 kids here.

I"m not licensed however, it doesnt matter if i have an assistant or not, i cant take in more kids. i can only have 5 regardless ...it goes by space here. BUT i do pay my dd, 15, to help during the summer or when schools out. gives her a bit of cash and me help but to answer your question, you would have to check your state/city IF your licensed.

hmm. i'd call and check on that. i thought you had to be 18 and have a GED at least to do child care.

In California, your own 14 year old child can be an assistant. Actually ANY 14 year old can be an assistant. They cannot be left alone with the children, meaning an adult must be in the home at all times. Only in centers do they have to be 18.

That being said, my children work for me in the summer and when they are out of school. My 17 year old daughter worked for me all last summer. She worked with me and as a substitute for me. I pay her $10 per hour. $15 if I have BIG work for her to do.

should be like that to HAVE a baby

oh wait, that would have not included me

then again, if the parents are ok with your having your child help you, go for it. mine all are fine with it.

In MN anyone over 13 yrs old can be an helper/assistant but having that assistant allows me to have 4 school age children over the 10 preschoolers. (I can NOT have anymore than the 10 under schoolage and 2 SA by myself.) Adding the helper/assistant only adds 2 SA to the limit so in the summer it is worth it, but not during the school year. The assistant can also NOT be left alone with any one. If I hire a 2nd adult, then I have to change my licensing to group family childcare with 2 adults present. Still doesn't give me the abiltiy to have more than 14, just changes the ages of the ones under SA (i.e. more toddlers or infants) so in my state I don't think it is worth it.
