dcb is 18 months old and started 4 weeks ago. All he does is follow me around. And I mean follow. He doesn't know how to play with toys at all. The problem with following me is that he does naughty things then, like taking things out.

but theres more, all he does is cry too. And wants to carry his sweater and shoes. He will also just stand there and watch me. I can't go to the bathroom without him screaming.

today I had enough, I put the gate up so they couldn't go to the rest of the house (usually not a big deal because they play with the tools or rice table) but this kid doesn't play, he literally runs after me. He then kicked the gate out.

he's here everyday. I'm at a loss at what to do. If I play with him, its me whos playing and he's watching.

Does he watch the other kids play, at all?

Is he guarding her personal belongings all the time to the point he CAN'T play?

he's not watching the other kids. He is either watching me and chasing me or glued to my screen door that i have to close it. At first I thought it was that he wanted to go out, but we go out and he wants in.

I put his shoes and sweater in the closet so he couldn't carry them around, he will suck his sweater till its soaked. gross.

sounds like daycare is a major transition for him. I have one kid like this but she is 3.5....same issues though, sucks on her hands, follows me around and cries for me, does not know how to play on her own or with others...hugely undersocialized.

The good thing is that if you feel you have the patience to stick it out with this little guy, I think a month or two of hard work and he would be over it. Its not going going to be easy though.

If you arent up to that sort of transitioning period, you are always free to tell the parents that he just isnt the right fit for your group.

Most of it will be sticking to your routine, redirecting him back to the kids and the toys over and over, not picking him up unless absolutely necessary and dealing with a lot of crying. I wouldnt try to entertain him or do anything special for him that the other kids are not getting. I know you mean well but doing that sort of thing is going to make him want it more and more and get really territorial over your attention. Remain calm and patient and dont let his antics get to you.

thanks, I'm going to start on monday and start redirecting him. Mom is a young single parent in a relationship. So he's exposed to older people all the time. He has issues following simple directions. Also, dcg wanted to play ring around the rosie and he had no idea and wouldn't hold her hand and had a melt down. poor dcg had no idea what was going on. (she's so stinkin cute)
