I sent a term letter to a family on Friday afternoon. I haven't heard anything from them about it yet and I am feeling a bit worried. I sent it to moms work email address and she is off on maternity leave so now I am wondering if she even checks that email. I have communicated with her through that email before in the past (last email was sent in November and she was still on mat leave) but we talk mostly through text. I really don't want to discuss this at the door and I don't want to surprise her at the door either! This is a great family and it was hard enough to write the termination letter.

I kind of wanted the news to digest over the weekend before seeing them. Do you think I should text her asking her if she saw the email? I feel like that is a bit awkward!

Any ideas? Wait it out? She doesn't come until Tuesday so there is still time.

I would text her and let her know that there is an important issue that you would like to talk with her about "today" if she is available for a phone call. The email you previously sent will also serve as documented notice.

Yes, I would send her a text letting her know the email had been sent. That might be awkward, but not nearly as awkward as having that conversation at the door.

I agree with Michael. Talk to her on the phone. Or you could just text her and ask her if she got the email you sent to such and such email address.

With something like termination, I think it is more professional to do it in person (even though it would be hard) while also handing them the written notice. Maybe that is old fashioned but that's what I would do from now on if I were you.

I have termed face to face before and it has never gone well which is why I do it this way. I feel it is more respectful to be honest with you! I just find the kids take away from me being able to say what I want to say and the whole thing turns into a mess.

Anyway she contacted me so all is good. Thansk everyone.

Might be better to give her a call and ask her if she saw your email. I try to keep things civil and a big part of that is having calm conversations, especially when it comes to serious things like terminating. Its probably going to be a little awkward anyway, but better than being blindsided.

Glad you were able to talk with her! Hate it when anything is left in limbo and having us wondering....
