Ok, so I'm thinking about getting a diaper genie. My two dck poop 2-3 times a day and boy is it stinky! You can smell it right upstairs hours after the fact. I even bought little scented diaper bags and throw them in a garbage can with a lid.
And I'll be adding another baby to the mix in a few weeks!

So my question is....do they work really well?

I had one when my dd was a baby. They are kinda cool, but they would probably be expensive if you use it alot. I put each diaper (bm) in a plastic bag and tie it, then I can throw it outside right away. Is there anywhere you can even put a little trash can with lid outside easy to get to each time?

I didnt use it for my son because the bags were just one more thing I had to buy.

I put the poopy diapers in a bag, tie it up and throw it outside. I just couldn't have it sitting in my house all day.

I suppose I could run it upstairs and just toss them outside. That's what my husband suggested (said it was a good cardio work out ) But then I have to leave them unattended while I do that, and everyone knows that it only takes 20 seconds for a toddler to get into trouble, and that's the stage my two are at. I'm not worried about cost, as I can write it off.

I bought one of those air tight dog/cat food containes. They are about the size of a 13 gallon trash can and fit regular trash bags. It has a screw top to it with a rubber type band on the inside of the lid to seal out moisture and in my case smell. It was $15 at the pet store. I bought it for ds room and it works wonders.

In the daycare room I also bought that "sense n spray" so whenever I walk in there to change a kid it automatically goes off momentarily killing the smell.

I have a diaper Genie for MY own kids, and I don't even use it, because the refills are expensive and I go through them too quickly. Yes, it definitely works as far as helping to mask the smell, but it can get pricey, especially if you have a lot of kids.

I just bag them and toss outside immediately.

I'm really paranoid about my house smelling like diapers ~ I always feel like I'm so used to it I don't smell it, kwim?

it just depends on if its worth it you, the extra cost for your comfort. I have plenty of shopping backs I have them some upstairs some downstairs for stinky diapers.

I like the idea of a covered trash can. Tie it in a baggie and put it in a covered trash can until there is a good time for you to get away.

I have a Diaper Genie and love it. It can be a little pricey to buy the refills but I try to look for sales and use coupons whenever possible. It's well worth the cost as far as I'm concerned.

All of this! I have one for my daughter in her room and was also thinking about one for the daycare but she's going to be PT soon so then I'll just bring it down to the daycare when she's trained.

Costco generally has a good price on them and I stock up when they're on sale.

I do a little of each. When I can't stomach the cost at $7 per refill, I go back to the shopping bag, throw it outside immediately game. When I get tired of running back and forth, I use the diaper genie again. It does work better than anything else to keep the smell out. I tried using a regular trash bag in it and it didn't work at all

We used a Diaper Genie for our kids and loved it. Now that they are older we use it for our pets.

I use a diaper Genie and I wouldn't do daycare without it. I put it in the bathroom between the wall and toilet and on the other side of the toilet is the trash can. Pee-pee diapers go in the "Pee Pee trash" and the poo-poo diapers go in the "Poo Poo trash". Doing it this way even trained the potty-trained kids to throw the pee-pee tissue in the trash and the poo-poo tissue goes in the toilet lol. In other words only the poop diapers go in the diaper Genie.

I don't spend too much money on refills this way and I'd prefer to pay for the refills than have my home smell of poo-poo. I empty it out on Wednesdays and Fridays after daycare. If it's not full you just cut the "bag" up to where the dirty diapers are so you don't waste any of the lining. I love it.

My diaper genie is five years old and unless its a poopy she helps carry it out.... otherwise i have to make a run to the trash can as fast i can without letting the little ones loose

I like this idea! I'm afraid I may not have picked up on that idea and would've tossed ALL diapers in the genie I think I will get one, and I like the post where someone said they would get tired of the cost then go back to bagging them.
Thanks for the input everyone!! I say one on sale for $20 not too long ago, I'll keep my eyes peeled for it again!

I have a diaper champ. I use the cheap garbage bags. I keep a solid (can type) car air freshener in the bottom. I also keep walmart sacks handy. I place the poo diapers in one of those and tie the top, before dropping it in the diaper champ. This has really helped keep the odor gone at my home.

When I change poopy diapers I use gloves and then when I'm done i stretch the glove over the tightly wrapped diaper and then put in the garbage, I never smell any poopy diapers that way works awesome!

I did not purchase any of the conventional disposal systems. I hung a garbage can from the side of the changing table. Then I made the system so that after I placed a dirty diaper in a the can, I could pull up on the used bag and a new bag would automatically be available for the next use.

I have one and I am not a big fan of it. I have more clients in diapers right now so it fills up fast. I also dislike the fact that tiny red line to indicate you are running out of bag is so faint. I step on the pedal and toss the smelly diaper in I don't want to have to search for a the tiny red line each time. Long story short more than once I have run out of bag in the middle of a change and had more work to do because of it. Also the refills are not cheap. I am replacing mine with one that takes normal kitchen size bags and still seals out the smell.

The refills are too expensive for me. I dont have an issue with a trash can and a tight lid. I do keep air freshner and Lysol right next to the can (out of reach of course) that helps with stinkies.

For poop dipes, I am in the bag it up in a plastic shopping bag and toss it outside immediately club! Pee diapers are fine in the covered kitchen garbage which gets changed every day right after daycare closes... pee diapers start to stink within a few hours, especially when it's hot... some providers/their families are so used to the smell that they don't even notice.

I bought a diaper genie. Sparing the house from the stinky diaper smells is worth the cost of the bags. I like the idea of separating the diapers.

I had one way back about 10-12 years ago for my own child and it does work, but emptying it was a stinky job and eventually the whole container starts to stink too. I used it when I started daycare but the refills got too pricey. I know its a tax deduction but you are still laying out that money all year. Now I just buy the slightly scented diaper sacks on amazon, they contain the smell really well. They have probably improved the diaper genie itself since the one I had though - I remember I didn't get nearly as many diapers to a refill as it said you should, and every time you emptied it you used up a bit of that plastic that they probably count in the # of diapers its supposed to contain. So its more cost effective to NOT empty it till full but I would want to empty it every day so I don't think I could use the diaper genie now.

I save my bread bags & use those...they hold about 2-3 stinky diapers and hold the smell in very well. Reduce, reuse, recycle.

That's a good idea... but we only go through about 1 loaf of bread per week. So, let's say about 50 loaves of bread per year. I end up with probably 15 poop dipes per week... so this wouldn't work for me.

I didn't want to do the diaper genie because my friend used it for her kids and yuck pushing a dirty or wet diaper into the top nasty.......even if the lid pushed it down just think of the germs and money wasted on refills.

I started out with the diaper champ, $10 at a baby store, looked new. I loved this because I could use any grocery store bag which I had plenty of since I shop for many kids to eat and us. BUT I had to stop using it because I have some in cloth diapers and I use wet wipes, not cloth wipes. Wet wipes can be dropped into the diaper champ but they flip right back up and out because they're wet and sticky until a dry diaper flips into the can. SO a few times of having a double touch a wet wipe I changed to a small step can which I use grocery bags for. Any poopy diaper goes directly into a grocery bag and tied and tossed into the foyer. I don't leave the room but I don't smell it.

I've used a Diaper Genie but was not happy with the odor containment, then a Diaper Champ but wasn't happy with the way stuff got stuck in the "flipper", mostly use grocery bags that the parents donate and walk them to my kitchen step on can which works the best for us. I empty it at least once per day so odor is not a big issue.

A few weeks ago I did find a plastic step on diaper pail from Meijer at a garage sale for a $1. I line it with a small trash bag and just throw the grocery bags in it. It has a large rubber like seal on the lid and seams to contain the odor well and works well in the basement diaper changing area. It is made by Cosco (not Costco).

The Diaper Champ is amazing. You simply use regular trash bags and it completely seals in the smell.

I was doing the plastic bag and throw it outside method for BM's and a regular lidded can for pee. But, I wanted to not have to change out my regular lidded can trash bag every single day. With the Diaper Champ, I change it every 2-3 days (and that's with six 2-year-olds in diapers!).

They can be spendy when new, so look on craigslist or on local garage sale sites for a Diaper Champ. I bought mine used for $10.
