I'm logged out for this one...

My husband and I just found out we are expecting our first baby! I am still very early (4 weeks along). Here's my situation/question:

In my policies I have written that I will provide parents with a list of days that I will be taking off for the school year by the beginning of the school year. So I need to provide that list by September 2nd. The reason that I do this is because I take 10 days of paid vacation per year, not including holidays, so I just like to give them plenty of time to plan for these days. Needless to say, I plan on using my 10 days of vacation for my maternity leave in April.

I'm still so early, that I don't feel comfortable announcing my pregnancy quite yet (at least not until after my first appointment in late September). Do I just not include those days off on my list that I'm giving out to parents on September 2? Is it really a big deal to just add them in later?

... I don't know why I'm so worried about upsetting families!

Since you aren't comfortable announcing yet, I would just add them in later. The parents will understand!

And CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I agree with Cedar... tell then when you HAVE to tell them. Lots could happen between now and then. Don't stress about it now.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!

Congratulations! You can always tell them you plan on taking your 10 vacation days in the month of.....whatever month your due date is. Tell them you are not quite sure of the exact dates yet. Then in a few months you can let them know you are expecting. If they press for exact dates tell them it is a private family issue that needs to be dealt with and you will be taking all 10 days at once and will keep them updated as you know more. They should be understanding.

Woo hoo, congratulations! I found out early June I was pregnant and struggled with when/how to tell families (I only had 1 at the time, just signed 2 more last month). I actually haven't yet- I am waiting for my next appt in a week. I felt bad Interviewing and not disclosing it, but I was so early on and hadn't told friends yet (still haven't told everyone). I figure if anyone has a big problem with it they can term and I'd let them go early, worst case. Can't see it happening, but you never know.

Anyway, don't stress- not sure if this is your first or not, but you can't prepare when it comes to dates and timing, so just relax and enjoy your "secret" for now- you couldn't give those dates for certain if you tried so don't worry- and if any parents are upset about that, they don't deserve you!

Congratulations again, and hoping for an easy, smooth pregnancy!

Congrats!

I wouldn't tell them yet. Heck, sometimes it takes people a few months to figure out they are pregnant! There is no guarantee you would have known by the beginning of the school year (although you do).

I think parents will assume you found out after that date when you tell them.

Congrats!!! Don't worry about them, yet. I was induced with both of my kids at 41 weeks, and you better believe I had parents bringing their kids until the very last second! I did my best to notify everyone of the plan, but you just never know when the baby will come, so you can only do your best with an estimate. Relax, and enjoy this exciting time!

Congrats! I personally would not say a thing until I have to, even three or four months if you go without showing for that long. Dont let your contract hold you hostage!

Congratulations! So exciting.
I'd send out my usual list in Sept.
And send out another one at the 2nd tri mark.
Maternity leave is the exception to the rule.

Yay, CONGRATULATIONS!!

Now we just need to figure out who you are...lol :P

I agree with everyone who said to wait and tell them later.
I have a policy in my handbook that says that I can change and/or add a policy with a 2 week notice. That way I'm covered if I want to change anything.

Congrats! I am 27 weeks along, with 14 kids revolving throughout the daycare in a week. I average 6-10 a day, with 2 being under 24 months. We told our daughter at 6 weeks and same with the DCPs, because of the awful symptoms I was experiencing. I also have a set 1 week off in July I took for family vacation in our contract. I have tried many options as far as even finding a substitute for in the home while I left for a month just so I wouldn't loose any clients. Everyone has been so supportive and helpful, and I haven't lost 1! Most have just made other arrangements for the end of November and are happy to bring the children back in a month.

I have been pregnant twice while in this business. The first time I didn't tell and I am glad I didn't as I found out I had lost that baby when I was 12 weeks along (the baby stopped living at around 9 weeks). I miscarried in the night and delivered the placenta the next day during business hours. Still, NEVER told anyone.

My last pregnancy, I didn't tell any of the parents until I was 12 weeks along either. It was heavily monitored and I had my Mom come in and sub during all of the appointments in the 1st trimester. They still didn't know. I, too, like to give a big head's up but in this instance I just wasn't comfortable. They were ALL understanding and were very reassuring when I said I would LOVE to give them an exact date of when I would go into labor but unfortunately I could not. They were all very kind and only ONE family left (because I wouldn't change my policies for her in the middle of my 2 week maternity leave LOL..she was always high maintenance and ridiculous). I had 9/10 kids when I returned.

So, even though we would like to give advance notice it isn't always possible nor wise. Just wait.

I think you should add the 2 week notice claus.Amend it before sending out new contracts. Congratulations I give you credit for doing this job while pregnant.
