I picked up my dd from preschool today and they inform me that it's the last day of preschool. This preschool is at a local YMCA, so they have a daycare there too.
Um, ok??? They previously told me they follow the local school calendar. Local school ends on the 24th.
If I had known her last day of school was today I would have given proper notice for last week to be her last day. Instead I had to pay for a WHOLE MONTH for her to go JUST TODAY? WTF? I'm seriously mad. I am VERY strict in my daycare for paying 52 weeks a year regardless of attendance, and I'm finding this to be ridiculous.
I had to of missed a notice or something perhaps? I really had NO IDEA it would end the first week in June. I would never had paid the whole month to go one day.

Sounds like a set-up, because why would the last day be on a Monday??

I bet other parents were probably just as shocked as you were.

That kind of notice should have gone out more than once and then be posted on the door or somewhere. That's what is expected of us.

I would argue THAT one- they are charging a full month for 1 working day? I'm sure it won't go a positive way for you, but it never hurts to attempt- do you have anything in writing that said they went with the school calendar? That stinks

I'm going to call. I just feel awkward

I don't ever go into the classroom/building. Because of the daycare kids I call and they walk her outside. I bet that's where the notices are. They should have verbally told me before today.

Their handbook states they follow the town's school calendar.

If preschool only goes until Wednesday, why would they bill you for an entire month?

If they assumed you would be using the child care, don't you have to fill out anything additional or different for that part of it?

I would think that they would have informed you that the costs for June's preschool is $xx.xx. Of course discounted to accommodate the fact that you aren't getting a full months worth of preschool.

Have you called them for clarification at all?

I picked her up. Told them she would be out on Wed. for DR appt.
They said preschool is over this week. See you Friday for the family picnic. and I was given a bill for the entire month, it's even labeled 6/01-6/30.

No other discussions of any kind ever took place. I have left a message with the billing department. I doubt they will do anything for me. I figure it's worth asking.
I really did not know and unless they sent home a notice that I missed, there is no way I would have known.

That's really ridiculous! I hope you get some satisfactory answers!

My only thought is that maybe the fee schedule was for x weeks of school, and the payments spread out over y months...so you pay the same each month? Kind of like if we want to make teachers pay more/week in exchange for not paying over the summer, so we just divide the payment differently?

They cannot charge you if they are not in business for the entire month. They can only charge you for the days they are in service. UNLESS they have a vacation policy, which I highly doubt a non-profit organization would have.

You know what, a light bulb just went off in my head. You're right. The preschool is a yearly tuition amount that they divide over 10 months. But I still do not understand why they ended two weeks earlier then the school district.

A lot of preschools work this way. They charge a flat fee for 10 months, and most of them consider the first week in June to be the end of the school year. It is pretty stinky to pay for a whole month that you aren't getting, but around here, that is pretty standard.

Ok. I didn't know. Its my first experience paying for preschool. Personally I would've rather paid a larger sum for 9 months. It makes you feel jipped. Oh well.

It's Scout-for some reason my logins are not staying?? Here we only pay a flat fee for 9 mos. My son's last day was two weeks ago so we pay sept-may and they go until the last day week of May. I think that stinks that you had to pay that and not use the whole month!

I think that's typical of preschools. A little gal I watch finished preschool last Wednesday (May 29th), and school here goes until June 18th. I have had kids go to preschool over the years, and they do always get out 2-3 weeks before the big kids' school.

When my older boys attended a private PK they always were finished @ May 10th or sooner and the local schools were not done until the last week of May or first part of June. We still had to pay for the whole month even though we may have only went 4-5x

Actually that's a really good point too. I boy I watch finished preschool two weeks ago and that district goes until next week, I think. And they follow the SD calendar.

This. At the local preschool they follow our school calendar but usually have a longer Christmas break and are done a couple of weeks before school. But we are aware of this because they send home a monthly newsletter in addition to any signs. We never paid monthly (we got a discount for paying one payment so DH was all about that ) so I have no idea if we paid for the full month of June.

This happened to me last year/ds's first year of prek, too. Except he atleast got 2 weeks out of it (they closed mid-June). This year I knew about it going in, but they are closing early (Tuesday 6/12). I do feel jipped, as he only will attend 7/8 HALF days and it's costing me $600. (or about $85 a day!)

I find that simply amazing.

Although I do a hands on non official curriculum with my daycare kids, because there are no preschools in the area, in the past I've offered ONE official preschool spot per school year. For next year I have enrolled that child already.

They come either for a morning session or afternoon session of four hours.

They get an official curriculum and more one on one cucciculum for preschool. I charge $100 a week for half days. I can't imagine $150 a week for half day preschool.

Wow $85 for 1/2 day!. My youngest son was in PK this year through our local school system and tuition was $87.50/month for 4 half days a week.
