I have a 19 month old that has been continuously coughing since arrival (1 1/2 hours ago). Mom said she was awake for 3 hours last night coughing. She also gave child some cough medicine before arriving. It does not seem like it is working. How long do you allow a child to stay in care like this? She does have a bit of a runny nose too, but no fever and acting normal. Would you send home? I just worry about all the germs in the air since she hasn't learned to cover her cough yet as well as her putting toys in her mouth.

I'd call for pick up. I don't allow them to drop off if they have given them cough medication. If it is bad enough for meds they need to be home. If they cough for more than 30 continuous minutes here they get a call for pick up.

Yeah, this kid is basically an aerosol spray for viruses. Call for pick up.

Just called for pick up. I suppose I better add something in my sick policy about this type of situation.....

Basically this mom just masked the child's symptoms. I would have the child picked up asap and tell mom mo more meds prior to daycare. If a child needs meds to function they need to stay home.

Kids need to be able to thrive in dc not survive. I don't understand why parents try to push their kids to function when they are sick and don't think about anyone else but themselves. It madden's me.

Also, if the child is not able to cover their cough and is coughing on all the other kids, that's not cool, I would send home.

i tell parents this. how would you feel if you went to work and your co-worker was coughing all over you, your stuff, your face or your food??? Of course you wouldn't like it at all. So why should kids have to put up with that? That is what I am here for to advocate for their personal rights when they can't. Just because they are small does not mean they should have to put up with it.

Parents usually get it when I put it that way. Of course, I say it a little nicer.

My illness policy states exlusion for "excessive coughing of more than once every 15 minutes".

Here here! Same. I also send out a Brightwheel message during the first cough and state my illness policy and that I'll let them know if their child needs to be picked up. It gives advance warning that I am monitoring them.

Good suggestion. I need to add this to my handbook.

how much is "no fever"? the reason I ask is because we had the coughing going on and no fever, and when we were fed up with it (a week later) and took her to the Doc, it turned out to be walking pneumonia.
you just never really know.

Her temp was normal (98.5). Dad picked up about 3 hours after drop off. I called 2 hours after drop off. I started timing how long between coughs and it was extremely short....2-3 minutes in between. She is a part time child so just came back today. Mom said "Dad said she didn't cough at all once she got home the other day". My response, "Really?!" Mom said, "I think it might be allergies". I found this really hard to believe since she was coughing non stop at my house for almost 3 hours! Oh my!!

Yeah pretty much all parents are liars! They don't notice how much the kid is coughing when they are on their ipads and the tv is on

I have had to literally spell out all of my excludable symptoms including the above. When I first started I had no idea I would need a 2 page illness policy

Yep. NO meds, they only mask symptoms. In this case, poorly.

Sadly I find this to be true.

I also have it in my illness policy that allergies must be documented and have a treatment plan. So the allergy excuse gets ZERO wiggle room here.

AND, a child under 2 should NEVER be given a cough medication without a drs permission.
