I'm interested in what holidays providers take off (I'm renewing my handbook to give out shortly).

New Year's Day 2017 falls on a Sunday. Do you close the Monday after? Similarly, Christmas Day falls on a Sunday. Are you closed the Monday after?

Thanks so much!

If a holiday falls on a weekend I don't take the day before or after and I don't charge for it either. I take New Years,Mlk, Memorial, the 4th, Labor, Veterans, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

I close Christmas Eve and Christmas Day/NYE and NY so if both days fall on the weekend I will be closed the friday before and the monday after.

If a major holiday falls on a Sunday, I observe the Monday after. If Saturday, I observe the Friday before. Typically, unless the parents work in an industry that doesn't observe holidays, (eg: nursing) they will have the day off too. I don't short myself holidays just because one falls on a weekend.

If New Year's Day is on the weekend I don't bother with it. I close Dec 25 & 26, so if Christmas is on a Saturday I close Christmas Eve as a makeup. My yearly holiday closures are:

New Year's Day
My Birthday
My Anniversary
Memorial Day
July 4th
Labor Day
Thanksgiving and the Friday after
Christmas and December 26th

If a holiday falls on a Saturday, I close on the Friday before to observe it. If a holiday is on a Sunday, I close on the Monday following to observe it.

I close:
New Years Day
Good Friday
Memorial Day
Independence Day
Labor Day
Thanksgiving
Black Friday (it is not worth it for me to open for maybe 1 kid on this day)
Christmas Eve
Christmas Day

My 3 day summer vacation is in the middle of July, and I will close from Wednesday, November 15th to Wednesday November 22nd for my wedding, and then Thanksgiving and Black Friday are the 23rd and 24th.

New Years Day
Memorial Day
July 4th
Labor Day
Thanksgiving and Black Friday
Christmas Eve, Christmas and Dec 26

I don't take an extra day if they are on a weekend. I do have 4 paid sick days and take 2 weeks of paid vacation, one in the spring, one in the summer (its next week )

These replies are so helpful! I didn't really have a sense of what was typical.

Sorry, I meant Christmas 2016. I renew my handbook over the summer so we start the school year out with any necessary revisions (most of my kiddos are gone over the summer).

July 4th is on a Tuesday in 2017. Will anyone take Monday off too?
My DH had the 4th and 5th off this year (2016) and I regret not closing for the 5th also.

Yeah, I'm thinking about a vacation too, it's the right time of year for a break. That way it's not an awkward week, otherwise, I would be open the Monday before and the Wednesday after.

I do the same! I also do early pickup on Halloween, my ds is still very young so early trick or treat and time to get ready. And this year I took off my bday and his so we can do something fun.

I also do early pick up on Halloween but I close the following day. (I do not appreciate the candy-induced hangovers and the cranky kids the following day )

Halloween is my birthday so I used to always take the day off. Now I realize it works better and alot nicer from my end if I just do early pick up and then close the following day.

Perfect! Then you get to enjoy your evening and relax the next day, that's the absolute best.

I learned from last year to take off our bdays! It's like the dck's know it's a special day so they all come cranky or sick, so this year I chose for us to be able to enjoy our days and get out and do something fun.

2017 (17 paid days off):
March 15-16 Spring Break,
May 1-4 Summer Break,
May 29 Memorial Day,
July 3-4 Independence Day Break,
Sept. 4 Labor Day,
Nov. 22-23 Thanksgiving Break,
Dec. 25-Jan. 1 Christmas Break --- I'm taking that Monday off!

I don't close any other days outside of these. If I had to close because I was deathly ill I would close unpaid.

The ONE day of the year we should all take off AND be paid for is our birthdays!

If I close for any additional days, I will give a minimum of 2 weeks notice (unless a sick day).

I take all major holidays off paid. I also take my birthday, the Friday after thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, day after Christmas.
I take my kids' spring break off (my kids are all older) and last 2 years I've closed the whole month of July. I don't charge for spring break or July.

I take all my holidays, built in personal days every other month and 2 weeks vacation paid which include bdays and random days taken off. I give a free week of vacation unpaid for my families to use whenever they want but has to be consecutive. So I basically do a 51 week paid year. Although when I had to shut down for ds's medical issues, I didn't charge for that week as a courtesy.

I close Christmas Eve to New Year's Day, but I don't charge. It's in my handbook so they have plenty of time to make arrangements. I also close for the following holidays and do charge; good Friday, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, thanksgiving and the day after

I close for the school system's Christmas and Spring Break. I don't officially close on other federal holidays but I rarely have kids on those days. I can't think of a single instance in the last two years I ended up working one of those holidays.
