Curriculum>Favorite Kids Music
SilverSabre25 08:23 AM 03-12-2011
Music is an important part of curriculum, whether it's music they make themselves, music to dance to, or music on in the background while they play busily. I always have a really hard time finding kids music that I like enough to listen to and doesn't drive me batty; I figure I'm probably not alone in this. I thought if we start a thread (maybe a sticky?) with our favorite CDs, it could help everyone.

Some of my favorites:

SteveSongs (from PBS Kids)
Mae Robertson (Dream and All Through the Night are the one's I've heard and they're great lullaby CDs...or background music during free play)
Snacktime (by the Barenaked Ladies)

Dr. Jean-awesome!

Jack Hartman

Hap Palmer - yes, awesome too!

Greg and Steve!!!!

Charlotte Diamond

Kathy Poelker

These artists all have music kids partipate in for music and movement . Especially the first four. It's real easy to have H. Palmer on as background music.

Piggyback songs and Raffi are great for background music. Piggyback songs are put out by Kimbo Music. All the songs are kid's songs sung to familiar tunes. Great for b.ground music.

I love Jim Gill, he has great get up and move songs for kids, I saw him at a conference once, and just loved him, he also has a couple great books, and I always check his website for his tour dates hoping to find him coming to my area, so I can take my kids to one of his concerts. You can you tube his silly dance contest, thats a cute one.

We also love right now the gummy bear song on youtube, you can type in just dance kids, and get the wii dances on you tube, so the kids can dance along on the computer. and theres a mario dance song for the boys that they love

I love this thread........

I feel the same exact way Silver. I like music that doesn't sound like the same tone, with the same kids singing. I like a good mix. Favorite CD's I have, that are old now and I wish they would have continued with them- maybe they did and I am just out of the loop with it. For the love of our Children 1 and 2
Different artist performing different children's music. I also love for rest time Jewels Lullaby CD. I don't get tired of it.

Dr. Jean
Hap Palmer
Jack Johnson

I have a ton of Childrens Cd but always looking for something that I could listen to all day and not get sick of. Bumping this up for more ideas and inspirations.

My friend has started a youtube channel with for nursery rhymes that are more soothing than annoying, at the moment he only has one video up (Twinkle Twinkle Little Star), and its only an instrumental, but he says that he is in the process of recording vocals to make a vocal version, and put up more songs soon.

https://www.youtube.com/user/FruityLemonMusic

I think its quite a beautiful version of twinkle star, and the video is also quite nice, and should be enjoyable to adults aswell as children, i certainly like it, and im 35. If you enjoy it, then please encourage him to make some more songs, i think he needs all the support he can get.

Anyways, i found this thread helpful for finding new music for my kids, and hope that my message is helpful to to other people too.

I watch children's educational music videos on youtube with my kids almost everyday. There's a lot of good stuff there. For example, Toddler World TV (http://www.youtube.com/user/toddlerworldtv) is one of my favorites. The songs are written by Dr. Matthew J. Dorman (he's an ethnomusicologist), and his children's folk group is called The Little Blue Globe Band. I use Toddler World TV to teach my kids basic shapes, colors, etc. Check out The Flower Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBoHLbIicxY) -- it combines a lullaby with learning. Excellent. Another good youtube channel is Kidstv123. Lots of great content and original compositions. There are other channels, too. Make sure you scan the content first to make sure it's good for kids!

I just got Ziggy Marley's Family Time, and we are loving it. The sound is different enough to catch their imagination and make them dance.

AWESOME recommendations!!! All of my kids LOVE LOVE toddler world tv!!!!!

I stream it from my iPad and they ask every day to watch a different video. Awesome for a rainy day. I have a program that will take YouTube videos and burn them onto a DVD. I make a few copies and send them home with the families. Free of course.

My special needs daycare child will stare with wonder over the flower song lol and because she's hospitalized at least once a month, her mom takes her YouTube DVD to the hospital with her to help keep her calm. Recently, she was admitted while at a doctor visit and her mom didn't have the DVD. The child CRIED literally the entire time until mom could get home to get the video.

We have Spotify on all the time here! What I like about it is when I play something it comes back with suggestions for similar music. I have found some great artists this way.
