I have this little one who is 13 month, I have spoken on here before about this little one not being able to eat solid foods yet still on liquid jar food, mom says that child has eaten banana's, cheerio's etc..and does fine.
I have tried child here on some baby foods such as Mum mum's, Farley's, Gerber munchies(for 6 month), gold fish crackers. Child will not eat them, gags on most of it, still gags on jarred baby food for 6 month old's and 8 month old's. Child has been on Homo mike for about 2 months now, mom brings 2 6 oz bottles each day for child (one for AM, and one for PM) Child will drink them fully if I hold child laying on my lap. I had no issues with that until the last month. I have now started to put child into highchair and hand child bottle, child will not drink it ( I have even put milk into a sippy cup, child only plays and bites that ).

Should I say something to mom??

This same child I have concerns about developing properly per-milestones. Like I stated child is 13 months old, not only does child have the eating issues, this child does not stand fully, does not attempt to walk, child is very very unsteady on feet when I do get child to stand holding something child stand on tip toes only for about 5 to 10 seconds then falls to bottom. When I try to get child to stand in front of me child will not even attempt to put feet on the floor. Child also has no interest in forming words the only ones I have heard is ma, da.

Should I be concerned at this point or wait a few more months before mentioning to mom?? I have never had a 13 month old who could not walk or at least not walk around holding onto things. This child is the first in over 20 years of doing child care.

Sorry for it being long... Thank you all for the help....

I would mention it, but I tend to zero in on issues since that's my kind of daycare.

As for eating, you might try dissolvable things. Cheerios are not dissolvable. Off the top of my head, Fruit Loops, (real, not generic), graham crackers (not generic), Ritz crackers, that's all I can think of at the moment. If you put a bite in your mouth and it dissolves in 8 seconds or less, it is dissolvable. I have had 3 kids with choking/swallow issues, and this is what the feeding specialists told me to do.

As for all the rest, I would encourage an Early Intervention assessment. It's free or covered by insurance. IF there is a problem, the earlier it is addressed the better. If not, then it's just an hour out of mom's day.

I wouldn't say anything at this point because I feel she is still in the range of normal development (just on the end of the range). My own son didn't walk until 14 months- so, anecdotally, there's another one! If you have something similar to infant climbers like thick, sturdy cushions that she could start kneeling at and putting her hands on- that would be like an in-between step to really "pulling up" to standing and cruising. I would make those available right beside her on the floor and not put her up there, but see what she does. She might start to take some initiative in moving her self up.

As far as language, she can still be behind and saying "ma" and "da" and still be within normal (as far as I can tell online). Also at 13 months, she will still have often well baby visits and the doctors always ask what are they saying, doing, etc to be sure they are developing on track. I know early intervention is incredibly important, but this doesn't seem to be the case of a delay.

As far as food- you know the saying "Food before one is just for fun!"? The child only really needed to start eating foods from a jar in this, her 13th month. Those jars for youngers are really just for fun and getting used to textures. Side note- wasn't she supposed to be on formula or breast milk until at least 12 months? Seems like 2 months so far of regular milk is early... This leads me to believe that things are moving too fast for no real reason. She should have just now started milk and "solids" so those crackers aren't easy for her and she's gagging. Instead of crispy crunchies, what about mashed potatoes, soft cooked peas and carrots that just mush when pressed in the gums, and idk applesauce with a slight chunk to it? Then move up to crispy crunchy stuff...

On the other hand... early intervention- so important. I get ya!

I have tried child on all that you have suggested and child gags (child tries to swallow anything before even attempting to chew / mush with gums, even the jarred food with the chunks in them child gags....

Child can pull self up from sitting but stands on tip toes for less them 10 mins... (I can't say for sure but I get this feeling/vibe that it almost seems like child is left in crib/highchair/swing/car seat at home).
Language I'm not too much worried about yet for I know that takes longer. one of my 3 yr old's is just finishing speech therapy for late speech.

Thanks ladies.....

I worked as an early intervention specialist for 6 years and, in my experience, a parent or care providers gut instinct is usually right on target. If you have a concern, tell the parents. Tell them why. Tell them early. Give them resources. (Eg: pediatricians, early intervention in your area)

Regarding walking, the developmental range is 12-18 months. It is common for littles to walk around 12-13 months but not all kids do. That said, my good friend is a physical therapist and she said that if a little boy is not walking by 12-13 months that it should be discussed with the pediatrician. She said it can be an indicator of developmental motor issues.

Regarding feeding, anytime a little one is gagging, the pediatrician should be alerted. There can be issues with swallowing that you cannot see. Even I don't try to address those.

Thank you.... I will get information gathered for her.....

This mom is one of the ones that likes to pass everything off onto something else.... (example - child had bad cough and green runny nose very fussy, told mom at pick up that nose was really bad and green.. mom was like yeah I think its her teeth coming in) etc.....

Definitely go with your gut! I think you know something is amiss and whenever you go by checklists or milestones it never gives a clear answer. For example my daughter didn't walk until 18 months and never spoke a word until 20 months. I KNEW there was nothing wrong with her but I took her to a Speech Pathologist anyway at 18 months and she confirmed that there was nothing really wrong. Sometimes kids meet milestones super late and are still normal but your gut is telling you something is off.

I have a little guy right now that I know in my gut is on the Autism Spectrum but he has only a few indicators and they aren't very clear. If I go by milestones alone he is meeting them all yet I know something is off with him. I had a gut instinct about another boy as well that turned out to be correct. Your gut will always tell you I think.

I would mention it but make sure it is not in a diagnosing sort of way. Simply mention that you noticed xyz and here is a listof resources hsould she want to take advantage of them. I did the same with the autism boys mom but she wasn't interested, so my conscious is clear
