Do you give out band aids for feelings? Bandaid makes it all better. I don't

I have my neighbors kids here today, and boy am I not in this game anymore! But the youngest one 3 yo got a tiny cut on Hand with no blood. He has been asking for a band aid for a half hour now.

I don't want to give him one as there is no need for it. Am I being to harsh?

"We only need bandaids if there is blood, is there blood?" "No? Okay then, do you want an ice pack?"

That's what we say! No blood, no bandaid, no exceptions

We give ice packs for everything, daycare version of mommy's kisses. If they want it they can have it, w/ no drama from us over the "hurt". People with icepacks need to sit quietly w/ no toys or books (so they don't get wet if the ice pack condensates). When they are done they put the ice pack on the counter and can go play. If we have one who is doing it just for attention after about 10 minutes I will decide it is time to play a really cool game/activity and they are welcome to join when they feel better.

If there's no blood, there's no need for a band aid.

Same here....only the blood needs to be running out.....not just a tiny spot.

I also refuse to give a Band-Aid if they picked off a scab. I tell them "I am certainly NOT going to give you a Band-Aid if you pick off the one God gave you."

If I gave out Band-Aid's everytime a kid thought they "needed" one, I'd be out of business simply due to the cost alone

If they say something like "mommy always gives me bandaids" I explain (just one time) that bandaids are made to soak up the blood and that owies heal better with out bandaids so if there is no blood it is better not to get one. Then we go back to "are you bleeding? No? Ice pack then!"

That is good! I'm stealing it and using it from now on!

Only if it's bleeding. I always offer an ice pack though and that seems to work around here.

What kind of ice pack do you all use that the kids can't make a mess out of. For my own kids I just throw ice in a zipper baggie, but that's easily opened. Looking ahead toward dc...what's a useful ice pack?

For most of their booboos I use the little reusable ice cubes for drinks. They are small enough and can be sent through the dishwasher.

I use the gel re freezable ones wrapped in a paper towel... They have them in all sizes and they are pretty durable. If you want kid proof: get the hard plastic squares that are made to go in lunch boxes... They don't mold but they work
And friendly reminder: always put something between the skin and the Ice

Yes, I use my older, thinning cotton kitchen towels for this.

I had tried the lunch box freezer thingies, but like you said, you can't really mold them around a bumped knee. Hadn't thought of the ice cube thingies. I wonder if they make them big enough to not be choking hazards.

I also only keep plain band-aids, that way they are much less "fun" and desirable.

Frozen sponges placed in ziplock bags and no I don't give bandaids unless there is blood or for hangnails etc.

Another one that doesn't give band aids for lame things.

one dcfamily keeps band aids on things for a ridiculously long time. They invariably fall off while here, and I have not successfully taught dcb to put them in the trash (where's our sick smiley Michael? ). That dcm also still uses hydrogen peroxide on things. Whenever dcb gets hurt here he starts to scream, "No, no peroxide! NO PEROXIDE!" despite the fact that I've never used it on him. Poor kid.

I do it on a case by case.

If they have a scrape from the day before from home and it looks icky, I will out neosporin and a bandaid on it (have permission for neosporin already on file).

If they come with a bandaid over a scrape and it comes off, if it warrants another one, I will replace it.

My kids don't over ask for band aids so I don't really have an issue either way.

I go through very few bandaids here.

Lol one little girl I used to babysit (about 2 at the time) when her brother (4 at the time) would accidently bump into her or she somehow got hurt (bumping into furniture or falling down) she loved it when I got out the ice pack. Then the rest of the day she would always say she (or her brother) needed an ice pack for the littlest thing . But in her defense, it does get really hot around here.
