Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>Edible Christmas Playdough--Not PB based! Good for Cookies Too

So I'm making a gingerbread house and realized that the gingerbread recipe I'm using would make a fabulous playdough for the holidays. It's pliable, not sticky, rolls out beautifully, and has nothing perishable in it! (And it tastes yummy)! Plus--you can bake the kids creations after they play with it and let them eat them--if you want.

1/2 cup shortening or butter
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup unsulphered molasses (half honey/half molasses if using blackstrap)
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

2 1/2 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1 1/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Mix dry ingredients in small bowl; set aside.

Combine shortening and brown sugar in large bowl; mix until light and fluffy. Add molasses (and honey if needed) and vanilla and continue to mix until well-combined. Add dry ingredients to wet mixture. Dough is crumbly at first but will come together soon. Finish kneading by hand.

Dough needs no chilling time, even if you're using it for cookies. Recipe makes a good-sized ball, but for more than two kids you may want to make two or three batches so they each have a good lump to play with.

If using for cookies: Preheat oven to 350. Bake cookies on parchment-lined pan for 8-10 minutes. Store in airtight container for up to a month.
