When you fill out papers that ask for your income, do you use your gross (before deductions) or do you use your bottom number?

For example, you made $50,000 but had $30,000 in deductions. Do you say you made $50k or $20k?

I always give my net income (in your example $20K).

I always use the net. If I owned a store I wouldn't claim what I brought in before I paid for my expenses because that wouldn't be my income.

It would depend on what the paperwork is for and which number they need. If you aren't sure you might want to call and find out. We usually put gross income because that is what is usually needed when we fill things out.

And a lot of times if you do use the gross sometimes you can also include your C form to prove business expenses. And it depends.. if it is for a car loan etc.. use the gross
