Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>How Rid The Home Of Poop Smell
Nextgen 08:39 AM 02-06-2013
Hi,

Before I open my daycare doors can you ladies share with what you use to keep the smell of poop down in the home. I don't want parents to come to a home that smells like poop all day. Also, do you ladies get a lot of complaints from your neighbors about having a home daycare?

I buy little baggies on a roll and bag dirty dipes before tossing them. The bags are super cheap and I get them in the pet section close to the dog leashes. I used to use plastic shopping bags but have found the small bags to be more airtight after tied. They go into the kitchen/main trash that gets emptied at least once daily, not a diaper pail.. those are so gross to empty. By the front door I have a Scentsy warmer on a table next to the sign in sheets. I change scents every couple of days.

That's all I can do, but it seems to be enough. No complaints from neighbors.. My group is small and very young so we don't spend a lot of time outdoors making noise, etc.

I have Bath and Bod]y works plug in's all over my house. I feel my house smells like a poop factory from 8am until 6pm. The parents always say my house smells good but all I can smell is poop.

One of my neighbors has been great and the other has complained a lot. She is older and complains if the kids are loud, if the babies are crying, if its hot and I have the kids outside and the list goes on. She has a home in Florida so she is gone from November until May. I love my windows open in the summer but I have to be careful. Living in Wisconsin you need to enjoy the nice days while you can. I try to take the kids outside when she is not home but that does not always work.

I diaper in the washroom so I dump any stool I can into the toilet and put the diaper in the trash can. I dump (ha I keep using the word dump) any particularly pungent ones right into the garage. We only get trash pick up every other week but I get my diapers picked up weekly so they are put in a bag that is separate from the rest of the household trash. I keep my bathroom door shut and, if needed I'll do a small spritz of Lyesol. I have 5 in diapers but only 2 routinely poop here ~ the others save for home.

My neighbours have never complained but I try not to be invasive.

I have those too and the Dollar store sells bags like that that are even scented.

I baag every dirty diaper separately before throwing away. I keep a trash bin on the stairs to my bulkhead (dc is in basement). The diapers are pretty much immediately outside. I also have a yankee candle plug in right by my front door. Whenever possible, I crack a window.

I have never had any complaints from neighbors...but I live in a very small town and don't have that many neighbors really close.

I use a diaper genie and the Arm&Hammer bag refills. I keep it in my bathroom and it fits perfectly between my toilet and the wall.

On top of the I follow diapering procedures very close to centers and use gloves so I just hold the diaper in one gloved hand and with the other hand I pull the glove over the diaper and then hold the diaper with the other gloved hand and do the same. It encloses the diaper inside the gloves ... I heard tell that this is called a "diaper bomb" .

Even before I did the "diaper bomb" the diaper genie helped keep a lot of the odor down. Every other day I would empty it.

I keep a simple diaper pail with lid on my porch and toss diapers in it immediately. Diapers never go in the house garbage. I discovered Scentsy two years ago. It's the first fragrance line (scented melting wax) that doesn't smell chemically to me or give me a headache. I have a warmer plugged in in my livingroom, where diaper changes happen, and in my bedroom at the other end of the house.

Thanks, I had to giggle when I read this. Only because I've wanted to post the same thing so many times. All of my kids are in diapers! Some days it's too much!

I do the same as most others. I try to wrap the smelly diapers in a bag and then they all go into one main trash - no diaper pails here. I empty that trash atleast 2 times per day.

I have a scentsy burner plugged in by the trash can.

I sanitize the changing table with bleach and sometimes the bleach smell helps cover the smell too.

Often the windows are open for some fresh air - even if just for a few minutes at a time.

After I change a poopy diaper, I spray an air freshener I made that combines water, a shot of vodka, and lavender essential oil. It immediately takes the smell out of the air. Love it!

Poopy diapers go into the Diaper Champ (it uses regular trash bags) in the garage. I actually have THREE diaper champs that I bought used since I used to have more wearing diapers/pull-ups than I do now.

I have had as few as 5 kids here when I first opened to as many as 12 kids here (between the ages of 2-5) and I have never once had a neighbor complain. Our houses are VERY close together, too. Less than 5 feet away! The neighbor on my left is always home and the neighbor on my right is always at work. When we go out together to the park, the neighbors always drive slowly and stare as we walk in the greenbelt to the park. It's hysterical. You would think they would be used to watching us go 2-by-2 in a line but no. They love watching. LOL!

My garage was converted to my daycare so I have a door to the outside in my playroom and after a diaper change I toss the diaper in a walmart bag, tie it, and put it outside in the big trash can. SOmetimes the outside area can get to smelling if the trash sits out too long or during the summer when it's really hot but it doesn't get too bad. I also use a scentsy warmer inside the house that keeps it smelling great!

I don't do anything in particular and I don't seem to have this problem. The only time it was ever an issue was when I had 4 toddlers and they all pooped at my house at least twice a day...ever day...and one of them was naaaasty. You could smell him a mile away.

I only have one in diapers here now and he is out to break some kind of stink record. He usually has an après-nap poop in his playpen so I light an incense in there before I bring him out, then I turn on the scentsy in my bedroom where I change his diaper. I could still smell yesterday's stink when I went to put him down for his nap today Maybe I'll light two incenses when he gets up?
Poopy diapers go in a grocery bag and I stick it right outside the back door until hubby or I gets a chance to put it into the big garbage can.

After I change a poopy diaper I toss it outside into a garbage can I have at the bottom of my entrance stairs. I also use air wick plug ins. One in every room.

I use a small pail that gets emptied every night or as needed.

I open the windows when possible to let the stale air out.
I use a sentsy burner in my bathroom that fills the whole daycare
I spray lysol when needed and when I change the pail
I freshen with a fabreeze gain spray, usually in the morning and at night, just a little.

I ask my parents if it smells in the daycare from time to time just because I am in it all day and used to the smell, my changing station is near the door

forgot to mention that I bag the poops, and double bag them if they are really bad. I also wash out my pale with a good strong lavender lysol solution and try to air out in the sun when possible.

No advice on this thread will help my naproom which is currently suffering the after effects of diarrhea in the pants while the child was still asleep so it.......spread out everywhere......

The child woke up screaming and messy. Ugh.

All cleaned up now but the scars of the cleanup and smell will linger....

I jokingly tell the kids "no pooping at daycare" and it works most of the time. LOL. Mine are all in their 2's and leave by 3:30 pm. It's rare that they do a #2 here. I think they are all just on the same schedule. When they do I tell their parents that they broke the pooping rule and we laugh.

So a shot of vodka makes the smell go away? I'll have to try that! LOL!

G. Can with a lid, lined as required by state regs., put dirty diaper into a wal- mart bag, tie, put in can on my porch. I also use wax warmers.

Are you kidding? Vodka? Is that because it evaporates? or holds the oil? What are the ratios?

I get the dirty diapers out of the house asap! I change everyone at the same time and put them all in a plastic grocery bag, tie it tight, then toss them in the garage. I don't allow the poop to stay in the house long enough to create an odor. On Thursdays (my last day of care each week) I open up the windows after the last child leaves in the nap/changing room. I lysol or febreeze everything and close the door to let it air out for a few hours. I use febreeze on the carpets after vacuuming each morning. I've never had a problem and actually get compliments from parents on how clean and fresh it smells.

I use gloves for poopy diapers & do the same as MarinaVanessa. I also throw a dryer sheet in the diaper pail when I put a new bag in (every day). If it's a particularly smelly one I put it in a plastic grocery bag & tie it before it goes in the diaper pail. I clean the diaper pail every night, first with odoban then with bleach. I leave the lid open overnight to air it out after cleaning it.

If I had to guess the water and oil get mixed together in a bottle and the vodka shot is for her I know that's how I would do it.... *giggle*

We have NINE in diapers! But we bag all diapers and they go in the trash out back immediately.

I use a spray in the immediate diaper area as soon as we are done changing a diaper. I have wax warmers upstairs and downstairs too. Parents always tell me the house smells wonderful and inviting (I like the country/cinnamon/apple pie type scents),,,so it's working!

"You can make your own spray air-freshener in just a few minutes using three simple ingredients. It’s a natural way to remove household odors, and the spray works well in the bathroom, on most fabrics and carpets, even in shoes. You can also customize it to suit your tastes.

1 oz gin, vodka, or rubbing alcohol
6 oz filtered water
20 – 40 drops of essential oil, a few suggested oils are: peppermint, jasmine, citrus oils"

I am pregnant, but even when I'm not I don't take shots of vodka. I altered the above recipe a little bit and just put it in a spray bottle. It seriously gets out all bad smells. I much prefer it over chemically smells.

My parents always say it smells good in my house even when all I smell is poop too! Lol But Scentsy is my home! I have warmers in my living room, kitchen, bathroom, & 2 bedrooms. I love how safe they are! My son picked one up (after daycare that day) when he was 14 months old & it didn't even phase him! Slight mess on the carpet, but came up no problem!

My friend and I opened our daycare at the same time -- her house always smells sooo good ............ I asked her what it is .. and it was Scentsy.

I would wrap my individual diapers and toss in a trash can located outside ... and I have Scentsy going at all times! My parents come in and no longer say ohhhhhhhhh someone let a stinky ..now its ohhhhhhhh what are you warming today it smells sooo good in here ... its safe and wont burn!

I was soo in love with this product I sell it!!!

Oops and I should say I found this website on accident -- I knew I was a member but forgot all the ones I was in - lol lucky same password as before :

If the diapers are particularily bad, or if it's summertime, I use the diaper baggies, and all poopy diapers get tossed into the garbage just outside my backdoor.

I have airfresheners around the house, but they are usually empty because I forget to refill them. But just recently I purchased some essential oils to make homemade sprays and cleaners, they leave everything smelling so yummy. You can even make air freshener and fabric refreshers using essential oils.

I remember my house smelling so bad all the time, since moving the diapers outside, it just takes a few moments for the lingering poo smell to disappear.

wow i just went back and read a few posts, i didn't realize so many people used essential oils too! lol. you can make it out of vinegar as well, don't have to have the vodka. the essential oils hide the vinegar smell. I have also just used filtered/distilled water, and essential oils. as long as you don't spray it directly onto something that might react to the oils, it's fine.

But something to remember is, essential oils lose the potency if not stored in a bottle that will keep out the light. so if you're mixing cleaning products or air fresheners, it's a good idea to use dark bottles.

I use the glove trick too (I love the term Diaper Bomb! ) and also have a diaper genie in my bathroom. I don't have the arm and hammer bag refills but I've found a few shakes of the DH's odor eaters for his stinky work boots works wonders!

I see this is an old post, but I have a few tips, so will add:

--I bag diapers in whatever small bags are available--mostly bread bags. They go in the bathroom trash, which is emptied daily. If the trash can starts to stink at all, I drop in a few drops of tea tree oil; fixes it right up.

--When someone stinks up the bathroom, I light a match. Burns off the stink, I guess! (Learned from a friend who has a cute vintage wall-hung match dispenser on the wall by her toilet!)

I run dirty diapers out to the garbage can right away. I also have a Scentsy tart warmer I turn on at drop off and pick up. For a quick fix during the day I use Citrus Magic spray - it's just essential oil, not chemicals.

I use a odor free diaper disposal from the first years. It's similar to a diaper genie but it has it's own filter which takes away the smell, and it has two "arms" on the top that keep the diaper hole closed until you push the lid down and then the lid forces the diaper into the pail and closes the arms up again automatically. It's the bomb diggitty.
