My new little teeny is here today. He is being a perfect angel...eating, sleeping, smiling and is so cute! Anyway, I should know this because it's only been a year since I stopped BF my own kids but how quickly you forget such things. Anyway, he is sleeping but is due to eat right now. I want to warm a bottle so it's ready when he wakes up so he doesn't scream and disrupt naptime, but I don't know when he's going to wake up. How long can a bottle sit out of the fridge? Is it an hour? The milk came fresh (not frozen) and has never been frozen. TIA!

It will be fine for a couple hours. This assumes the room is normal room temp.

Breast milk contains live antibodies that kill bacteria, so it stays fresh longer then milk or formula. According to resources I have studied, it is safe for 4 hours at room temperature.

According to my Lansiloh storage bags, fresh breast milk can be kept at room temperature for 10 hours, and then it must be discarded. I personally would not allow for 10 hours, but I'm sure it's still safe.

I have always heard 4. 10 does seem like a lot but I agree that it would probably be safe.

"Per Breastfeeding, A Guide for the Medical Profession by Ruth Lawrence, MD (p. 438):

Breastmilk can safely stand at room temperature for 6 to 8 hours and need not be discarded if the first feeding attempt is incomplete. In contrast, formula must be refrigerated and discarded after the first feeding attempt because it contains no antibodies or infection protection factors"

the 6, 8, 10 hours, whatever for fresh breastmilk is for straight from the tap fresh, not refrigerated. Once it's refrigerated I wouldn't leave it at room temp more than an hour or two, especially after heating
