DCM comes in Monday and says DCB has allergies and so his nose is running. Now today everytime anyone sneezes snot comes shooting out. This is absolutely ridiculous. It's only 8 am and I've wiped no less than 20 times.

6 days until vacation............I keep saying that in my head.

Could you add excessive snot to your Parent Handbook? That's in mine. I even state, "That may or may not be caused by illness."

I might tell the parents that you need a written doctor's diagnosis of allergies and what the treatment plan will be (children's Claritin, Benadryl as needed, etc.) because the child's excessively runny nose is causing a health/sanitation issue.

My illness policy states:

There are times when a child may be excluded due to the required amount of care he/she needs when experiencing a common cold, illness and/or allergies. For example, a cough that is disruptive to normal daily activities, when a child is unable to cover his/her mouth while coughing or when the amount of nasal discharge or fluid becomes unmanageable for the provider to continue maintaining a sanitary environment. This will occur at my discretion and will be handled on an individual basis

Depending on the age of the child, I would consider sending home for excessive snot. NOT because the child is contagious or anything but more because I cannot seriously follow a child around keeping snot off everything.

I have a 5 yr old right now who is doing the same thing...sneezing tons of snot constantly through out the day but I won't send home because the child can get a tissue and contain the "ick" themselves.

I know there was one time when a daycare girl had really bad allergies and was sniffling and sneezing a lot in the first few hours of daycare and right after preschool the teachers decided to send her home because she looked like she was miserable which would affect her ability to participate in regular activities.
