Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>What Do I Do With This Kid???

5year old dcb, been here over a year now, cannot be still EVER!! I mean he is constantly moving....whether it be clapping hands, digging at his teeth, kicking his feet, currently rolling back & forth on the floor while watching a movie during quiet time! He has no attention span either, he usually lasts 30 seconds on any such toy or activity, then is pulling the next thing out. He is VERY nosey, I mean will knock over another kid to see or hear what someone else is doing or talking about. I'm tired of saying over and over and over again, stop moving and watch the movie, stop kicking your feet, blah blah blah
I find it hard to believe that there are no concerns about this in school, as he is PreK, but it's only 3 hours a day so maybe it's not seen all that much yet.
It drives me absolutely crazy as he is my only dck who cannot focus on a task while the others are doing as told and I don't think he can help it.

Yes, he probably can't help it. As the mom of a now 17 yo with ADHD, and as someone who also has ADHD, I totally sympathize with the boy. When the compulsion to rock, or jiggle, or move feet/hands repetitively, comes over you it's borderline painful to resist. I'd just move him a little away from the others so that he's not hurting them or distracting them and let him do his thing.

Those inflatable gym balls (not the medicine balls, but the ones used in pilates, etc) are great for seat work or any other kind of activity that requires sitting and focusing (crafts, meals, circle time). He can bounce, rock, etc on one of them and it might actually help with focus. DS and I love using them. Really helps us to center ourselves.

During the quiet time movie, just move him to the back of the group, and give him a bit more space, and let him roll around (so long as he's not rolling all the way across the room LOL). He'll be out of sight of the others if he's in back and won't distract them.

Yes he lives on the nabi, ipad, and video games at home! That is how he spends his evening, not much that they do with him unfortunately

yeah that is definitely a problem. and his "preK" program may be a lot of teacher lead activities and play time meaning not much is expected of him except at your place. pretty typical of a screen addicted kid.

I have his 5.5 year old brother and yep...I can tell when there has been an increase in screen time. I just saw a pic of him at a reataurant on a tablet. What happened to coloring books and conversation???

I did tell mom that they need to decrease it because he lacks any ability to listen when hr has been on them for a reat deal of time.
