Here is the most recent info regarding the trailer bill. This was posted by another provider earlier today:

URGENT!!! STOP Increased Penalties or They Will Stop Family Child Care
Family child care providers,

Call, email, write, or visit our legislators to stop this bill or this portion of the bill ASAP. Sometimes bills get passed before we even have a chance to read them.

For those of us who rely on this business as sole income for our families, one citation for one day could wipe out a month’s income, leaving us unable to make rent/mortgage, bills, food and etc. We work hard and love what we do BUT we cannot continue serving our children and families under such a great risk. If we make a mistake, we want to fix it right away without being put out of business. If this is what they mean by “Zero Tolerance for Type A violations”, it will work perfectly.

My daughter, who has worked in my child care for years and works for several other family child care providers was hired at a new facility but the owner didn’t realize that she needed to clear her specifically to work there. The owner was fined $500.00 for the five days my daughter worked before licensing cleared her.
Imagine what that would have been under this proposal: 5 X the annual fee, which is $635 per day X 5 = $3,175.00.
For me that would be 2/3's my monthly take in. And what if the provider is paying employees? This would have been devastating.

I can’t imagine what this would do to the supply of early care & education. Even with providers’ best efforts, the provider who makes one mistake will be done for. We lost so many providers in the last few years because of both the economy and state budget and policy decisions. Why would anyone go into the field with this enormous risk? That means that more babies and toddlers will be with persons and facilities that aren’t licensed and nobody would know the conditions of the care.

Proposed MAX FEES with the proposed 10% licensing fee increase:
FCCH
1-8 - $72 - $360/day
9-14 - $140 - $700/day
Child Care Centers with 121 slots or higher could be fined up to $6,050/day.

I would be more than willing to pay the increased fees if we could have decent regulations. Everything is so gray and disorganized.

Exactly. If I knew for sure what a violation was and it was printed in title 22 then I wouldn't care. But I find it ridiculous that I can leave my knives on the counter top pushed all the way back or have soap, toothpaste etc. In a hung cabinet without a lock and it's safe because it's "out of sight out of mind" but another provider in another town gets cited for doing the same exact thing.

Thanks for the info!
