Do you'll give your dcks seconds when they ask for them? I have 3 dcbs that wants seconds on every meal I give them. I don't think that they are still hungry, I think it's more of being greedy. These are some very big boys for their ages!

Not if I know we had a nice filling meal. I'm currently having this issue with my own DD and her weight..... It's a strugggle.

I think it depends on how big your servings are. I serve the minimum serving size for their first helping. In most cases, the "serving size" isn't a whole lot. They are allowed to ask for more but they have to have taken at least one bite of everything on their plate first. When I give them more I give them about 1/2 a serving size. They do not get thirds unless they have eaten everything on their plate and have had seconds of vegies and fruits. Thirds is just a tiny bit more (maybe a 1/4 serving size) and that's all. Then don't get more after that. None of the kids I have are overweight or even chunky. They are all think and fit. We are very busy and active so they work up an appetite. I have some that will have thirds at most meals and some that won't finish their firsts.

I give second of everything. I have healthy active normal kiddos that eat a lot! I put as much food on the counter as I will let them eat and they serve themselves family style. 99% of the time they finish everything put out. I serve a veggie fruit whole grain lean meat and milk at every meal. They know the consequence for not eating is playing hard on a hungry tummy.

I give seconds on vegetables as well, but it's like pulling teeth to get them to eat them the first time. These boys are some meat eaters!

Our meals be filling and I don't want to not give it to them in case they are really still hungry. I have a 3 year old that weighs at least 70lbs give or take a few pounds and he is solid!

I give seconds of whatever they want, but never thirds. I give small portions the first time. If they have eaten well and tried everything, I will give them seconds.

I give seconds when they ask for it, but it has gotten to the point where nothing else interest them but food. Now I do have one dcg that barely eats anything and sometimes she won't eat at all.

I agree, I usually give small 1st portions, I HATE wasting food, then will give bigger 2nds when we know what they want. They must eat some of their fruits and vegetables before I give seconds, though.

They are suppose to have a 1oz of meat, but their portion is always bigger that that and so is everything else. When I give them seconds I will give a smaller amount.

This is what I do too except that I serve seconds only if they eat everything on their plate BUT I serve seconds of what they want.

Now 2 of them will eat their entire meal, the 3rd one will eat most of it and that is why I do give them seconds when they ask for it.

I feel you!! My dd weighs 72 lbs and she is almost 6. However, she has sleep Apnea- which is the cause of her weight gain. Poor sleep = weight gain. I have to help her loose weight or her sleep apnea will not go away and she will continue to gain. It is a vicious cycle...

I have always given them seconds, but sometimes I wonder do they really want it or do they eat it because It's given to them. One little boy comes through the door saying "Mrs. Alicia, I'm ready to eat and he will say that all day"! lol

seconds are for hungry kids so if you have cleaned your plate you may have seconds. if there is still some after everyone gets seconds you may have 3rds but usually there is not enough for 3rds.

I will not give seconds on fruit.

Veggies are unlimited.

Protein I'll give seconds.

Grain I will give seconds IF they've eaten something other than grains in the first place.

I'll give seconds, but only if they eat everything. Then they can choose what they want seconds of and I just give them a small scoop. I have a boy who would eat all day long if you let him-he eats more than mom at supper every night.

My state requires we give seconds on bread and fruit or veggies. I do not give seconds unless they already ate everything on their plate.

OT - but I had never heard of this until a month ago when my 6 year old nephew had his tonsils removed for the same reason. Apparently, his tonsils were causing sleep apnea and the sleep apnea was causing him to be overweight. I would never have linked all of those together.

Sorry for going OT

Thank you'll for your responses! As long as they continue to eat what is on their plate, I will continue to give seconds when they ask for it.

I was tyring to make a decision as to whether I should continue to do it or not. It's not like I feed them a lot of junk and with me is probably where they get their healthiest meal from! Thanks again!

I do seconds but they have to have eaten all of their first before they get anything else. No seconds on sweets or the rare treats we have. If I feel a child really isn't that hungry and it's more for something to do then I offer veggies only or an apple. I serve breakfast, lunch & 2 snacks so it's not like they have to wait long. Also, none of my kids are even the slightest bit overweight.

If they ask and they have eaten everything and you have enough for seconds+, then why not let them? I think that if you have a pretty well balanced program with lots of large motor activity planned into your day then the kiddos will burn off the food they consume.

Also if you are only serving healthy nutritious foods, then I surely wouldn't worry about them filling up on that.

I have told a child "no seconds" if they have a habit of not eating the seconds I give them because then I think they are only asking because their friends did.

I have also told certain kids no seconds+ on certain food that I know they tend to go overboard on. I have on DCK that goes hog wild on breads and I think she needs to balance that out by eating more veggies/fruits so I encourage seconds for that child to be something from the veggie/fruit group verses the bread group...kwim?

This is what I do, you can have more only if you eat everything, and then I just give them what they want. My son is a big breakfast eater he will eat 3 bowls of oatmeal or malt o meal, this morning he had 6 whole wheat and oat pancakes with real maple syrup, he is tiny, I give him as much as he asks for as long as he ate the other stuff, and then he usually eats barely anything else the rest of the day.
edited to add, that I do not do seconds for snacks unless the want more veggies, otherwise snack theres no seconds.

In my class, we do 2nd's or 3rd's (if there is extra). But I only give more of a certain food if they eat the rest of the food on their plate. So if "Bobby" ate all his pineapple and left all his chicken, I'd tell him to eat some of his chicken first. I also won't do 3rd's until everyone has had a chance for 2nd's.

We did have her tonsils removed and we had hoped that would do the trick. It did help but she still has it.

I never thought to link the two either!

Some of them need a push on eating more veggies, so I may cut out the seconds on fruit and tell them they can only have more veggies!

This is exactly what I do! We have ages 2-5 1/2 right now and we serve the same amount for the first serving to each. The little ones usually don't finish the 1st serving, some of the older ones will finish 2nds every time and sometimes have thirds.

I think the key is that they have to take at least one bite of each thing on the plate before getting seconds of anything, then they have eaten 2nds of fruits and veges to get thirds of anything else.

We also don't have any that are overweight so it may be different if we did.

edited to add: We also do not serve any food that is unhealthy (no dessert, fried foods etc) so they are usually actually hungry if they ask for seconds!

I let them eat as much as they want and my parents like that. But I do only make so much of the main food so they get seconds, sometimes thirds, but for the fruits and veggies, I make it according to what they usually eat and if they want more, it's easy to make or give more. Plus I only have 6 children to feed so it's easy to budget for it and 2 children are babies and only eat some of the menu items, one child is gluten/dairy free so he usually gets his own little meal and my other two dck's are part time and one of them doesn't eat much at all. Oh and one full time boy who eats a lot, but like I said, It's not like I have to feed a ton of children so it's not a big deal to give them as much as they want, but like I said I won't make more of the main component of the meal, when it's gone it's gone. (I do make sure everyone gets equal servings after the second. For example, if a child has had seconds on the veggie and another hasn't I usually wait a few minutes to see if the other child eats it and wants more before I give thirds)

This. Except, usually I make them finish nearly everything on their plate, unless I know they really don't like a particular food. For the most part, if someone wants seconds, they will eat those veggies in order to get them!

According to the food program I have to give seconds and I can't require they finish anything before seconds. I serve the food program minimums and give seconds of everything. If they're hungry after seconds I encourage them to eat whatever's left on their plates.
