Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>What Do Your Families Do For Work?
wdmmom 09:00 AM 02-20-2012
I've seen on this forum and another I subscribe to that a lot of providers are off today.

Do you take today as a holiday? What do your families do that gives you the day off?

I work for a family that are both teachers (and school is in session today, so I work).

I work for a DCM that works for an insurance firm and DCD works for a large bank. They both had to work today. (Even though the actual branch of the bank is closed.)

Another DCM is a nurse and DCD is in sales. They both had to work today.

Another DCM works retail and DCD works for a postage company. They both worked today.

And my last family, DCM is a therapist and DCD works in the technical field. They both are working as well.

What do your families do for a living?

My clients currently are BOE, Public Safety, City Hall and Finance Industry.

It is winter break, here, all schools are closed for the entire week.

I stayed open so my clients can knock out their spring cleaning, spend special alone time with older (school aged) sibling, or get their taxes done. (at least that is where I was told they were ) I have everyones cell phone numbers and emergency contacts JIC.

Family 1: Tax preparer/electrician
Family 2: Tax preparer (same office)/auto mechanic
Family 3: Retail (single mom)

Family 1 has today off, but I have their precious girl. DCM 3 is working, but school is out, so I have her 2 boys. Family 2 never tells me what the schedule is, so who knows if dcb is coming today or not.

All of my parents have irregular schedules so they almost all off today but not because of the holiday.

Set 1: mom server/dad manufacturing supervisor
Set 2: mom works at bk/dad mechanic
Set 3: mom nurse/dad construction
Set 4: mom nurse aide, never met dad
Set 5: single mom who jumps around with jobs. Right now cleaning company and starbucks
Set 6: single mom retail
Set 7: single mom works with mentally disabled

It seems like there are a lot of people that work entry level jobs in my area and thr more educated or higher earners send their kids to centers

I have:

teacher/city worker
teacher/bank
teacher/actually not sure what dad does...he has a job but I rarely see him

So...I have off today. I don't want kids on holidays so I don't even offer to work today. I don't charge when kids are not here, so parents are fine with it.

I work today. I don't take off President's Day, MLK Day, Veteran's Day. I kind of go by what I had off when I worked at a large office. New Year's, Memorial, 4th of July, Labor Day, 2 days for Thanksgiving, 2-3 days for Christmas.

My Moms are all pretty much office workers at varying levels:

The Dads are a mixture of white collar and blue collar workers.

I only keep kids from one family, since they have 4 kids and I already have 6 of my own. 10 is my limit.

He is in the military. She owns her own small business. It's a hair/nail salon.

I generally have their youngest all day and their other 3 after school only.

I'm open today. School is closed. It's a parent teacher conference day. Closed tomorrow too. So I have all the kids today for the whole day. Or shall I say "had". Dad gets off pretty early usually and always comes and picks them up as soon as he can get here. He commutes an hour to work, otherwise he wouldn't need daycare.

Over the years, I have had:

Nurse (have had a few of those)
Teacher(have had a few of those, too)
Chiropractor
Airplane mechanic
Vet tech
house cleaner(own biz)
shift worker/jack of all trades
retail
personal banker
ironworker
government security contractor
sahm

I always take major holidays, and the folks that work on holidays find alternate care. I have traditionally done vacations in the summer since I was usually around half teachers' kids. I have never had kids/parents/teachers all in the same school schedules, so the only break during the year that lined up was Christmas.

3- mom works for veterans affairs/ dad is a firefighter
4- mom is a speach therapist/ dad is a realtor
5- mom works at a medical practice/ dad is a butcher at local grocery store
I take all the school holidays off so my families have all managed to find care or one parent is home.

We live in a suburb outside of DC so at least one of my daycare parents is usually a government worker and has the day off. I always tell my parents though, if there is a holiday where BOTH parents HAVE to work and they dont have any other option to let me know and we will discuss it.

My goal isn't to leave them without care if they indeed really have to work. Their are lots of other times where they can take off and bring their kids if they need a break. I tell parents at interview time, if you are a parent that is consistently late to pickup, arrives early, brings kids to daycare sick when they should be home, late on making payments, or always forgets checkbook, then I will be less likely to be understanding when it comes to needing me for something extra like these holidays.

Professions are
(personal trainer/personal trainer) They make their own schedules so its not much of an issue.
(therapist/works for census bureau) one parent off
(retail/body shop worker) both parents working but grandma off so taking DCG and 2 older SA sisters out for a fun day.
(courthouse receptionist) off
(police officer/military) off
(finance mgr for govt contractor/military Police) one off one working
