I have a sick child today, up during the night and couldn't even make it to the potty due to loose sick stools (thank goodness for nighttime pullups). I have had one other day I closed due to my own children being sick since January. I know parents are responsible for backup care and I know most of mine depend on grandparents or have to take the day off if I close due to illness. Why are some of them so grumpy about it? I know it isn't everything "going as planned" but it really is not my fault that they don't have backup care arranged or that they wake up 40 minutes before they are at my door dropping their child off so they don't leave any time to find care if needed in the morning.

Most of my DCFs are out sick with their child 7-14 days of the year. I am out sick for 4 days with my TWO children. I'd say not only do I keep my children healthy but it's awfully considerate of me to not charge DCPs for those days I have to close since most get sick paid time off from their jobs.

I guess I just needed to vent - really perturbed that it is an inconvenience to my parents when their children are sick and they are forced to be parents because I refuse their sick child -- AND it's an inconvenience to them when I am a parent and step up and take unpaid time to care for my own child.

/sigh

Most of the parents are only looking out for their own best interest and we see that common thread in many, many posts here.

I hope you enjoy the day snuggling up to your little muffin.

I completely understand and feel for you. A lot of parents in my area want a home daycare for the coziness and price, but get upset that we don't always have an assistant or substitute. Some don't really care about us as people and parents, yet some do. I always feel guilt if I have to close (only happened maybe 2 times). Sometimes I long for a job with paid days off again and a substitute (but only some days)

I also feel the same way but I do my best to make sure parents know, they HAVE to have a backup plan. If they dont have a backup plan (which I ask about at interview), I wont take them. If they are new to the area, cant miss work, dont have family and friends here then I will be honest in saying that my program is not the right fit. They cant be here with only me as the plan A, and not plan B. Anything can happen at anytime and I am not going to be worrying about my daycare families if I have an emergency.

This is a great idea! If I could rewind time , I would send my problem family packing during the interview! They never have a back up , make me feel horribly about vacations , maternity leave , etc. Your idea could have saved me years of aggravation !

This is really smart!

I don't feel it's my job to worry about it however. I just take the time I need and they have to worry about making it work on their end. I care less and less the older I get.

Try not to worry about it! It is their responsibility to have back up plans. If they don't, then than is poor planning on their part. If you decided to stay open while your own child was sick, the parents would be angry when their child came down with the illness. You have to do what is best for you and your family, and let them worry about themselves.
