Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>Anybody Else Had To Add Some Crazy Clothing Rules?

Had to email a mom today because she is constantly sending her daughter in strappy tank tops that are way too big and exposing. They always fall off her shoulders and just slip right down (she is VERY skinny). Now this DCG has started removing her shirt to get attention and getting the other kids to do it. Yes, I could change her into a daycare shirt every day but to avoid the extra work for me, I just emailed and asked that her mom hold off on strappy tanks and tops for now. Explained the issue and asked that she be sent in a t shirt to daycare until she loses interest in undressing or she fits into tank tops better. They have been here for 3 years and the mom is usually quick to work with me so hopefully it is not a big deal.

But why do we even have to say all these things? The tops are literally falling off her shrimpy little body right there with mom at the door watching and you can imagine what will happen once this little one starts playing and moving. Really, I do get tired of saying things that should be obvious. Don't send your kids in tops that show huge portions of belly or hang down and show nipples, dont send them in pants so tight that there are marks and bruises on them, dont send them in dollar store crocs when you know that we take long walks every day and these fall off just when you walk your kid a few feet to my door, it goes on and on and on.

yes....how about don't send your toddler twins in the exact same tie shoes....

They look the same, but are actually one size different. Not a problem for the guy with the smaller feet, but the guy with the bigger feet does NOT like having the small shoes on his feet.

I really, really, really hate tie shoes on toddlers anyway.

We have a strict no-sandals rule. The next one we are adding is "pants must fit to waist, or be secured by a belt the child can manage on their own". Tired of watching little boys running around playing while clutching the waist of their pants.

Ones we wish we could add:

No onesies for anyone who's potty trained
Children's shoes must have child size laces
Girls must wear shorts under dresses or skirts
Anything that is so tight, long, big, etc that it hinders movement is not allowed
Children's extra clothing must be clean

I totally understand the frustration of having to say these things. You would think it would be common sense not to dress your daughter in shorts so tight and short that it hurts her to sit down.

This post makes me laugh. I have a very wealthy family that ALWAYS buys clothes too big- like they are going to last to the next year anyway.

My friend who does daycare has kids who come in the smallest outfits, most mixed up patterns, or in their pjs. We laugh everyday when we go for walks at what the kids are wearing.

I don't get how parents don't notice its 3 sizes too big, or too small, or how annoying tie shoes are.

May I add "no overralls on potty training children".

The next incarnation of my handbook will include a clause on clothing. Can't believe some of the stuff these kids come in.

Might have to make a rule about offensive sayings on shirts (I just don't see the cuteness in a toddler with "Lock up your daughters!" scrawled across his chest)

I am addding no fleece sweatshirts and lined pants when we have temps in the 80ies.

I checked the cubby for spare clothing but they were even warmer yet.

I have strict rules on clothing..

I only care for children 20months to 5 years. All clothing must fit and be child friendly so that your child can manage their own clothing. We practice life skills everyday and it is important that you give your child a canvas to work with. This means:

NO shoes with strings, unless they know how to tie and untie knots
NO snaps on pants
Shoes must fit and be manageable for the child to take off and put on.

No jackets, pants, or shirts with strings of any kind
No flip flops EVER
Nothing with complicated fasteners

All clothing must be suitable for safe play at all times. Clothing should not prohibit your child from playing normally throughout their day. This includes:

pants too long that will cause them to trip
pants to big that constantly fall down, causing them to fall
clothing that exposes areas of the body that are meant to be covered up.
Do not dress your child in a hooded shirt without having one without a hood under it.
Be sure to dress your child appropriately for the weather, don't send your child in shorts and sweatshirt when it's 25degrees outside.

last one hate that I had to add this one, no offensive clothing. I had a kid come in a T-shirt one time that said my dad thinks your dad sucks.....

I just have to say when my toddler twins started walking, their feet were so small there was only one pair of shoes that fit them (they were also one size apart) so I had to buy the same shoes. I wrote their initials inside the tongue, on the back of the heel, and in a few other places. They were velcro though. Why don't you suggest she get a spare set of shoelaces and lace them in different colors so you know whose are whose.

Wow! It is really sad that there is really a need for you all to add this to your handbooks but with some of the parents these days.. ugh!

My youngest just came home with a notice that was distributed from school with the same type of rules. I read it and realized that it wasn't directed at me and mine for sure. Again.. sad that they felt the need to send it out - dressing a child properly is just plain common sense.

As far as the offensive sayings - thank goodness most in Daycare aren't able to read them. I think the worst we ever had was a child that had "sexy" on her shirt. The child had no clue and neither did her class thankfully. The Teacher and I just looked at each other and rolled our eyes. We are in a Church Center - you'd think the person dressing her would think twice before sending her in that.

No kidding! I had a mom who dressed her 3 year old girl in a onesie with 10 snaps while potty training. (Even if she wasnt potty training- do I really want to snap and unsnap 10 snaps several times a day)?
