Concerned About A Two Year Old Development
Hi Everyone,
I have a have a 2 year old boy that doesn't participate in any of our learning games. He doesn't know any colors, numbers, abc's etc. I ask him just as I do the others, but he just laughs. I give him a chunky 3 piece puzzle and he can't seem to do it. Development wise, he seems so far behind. He eats with his hands even though he sits at a table with his peers that use utensils. His mother is a bright, good Mom. A phys ed teacher. She seems to think that the other children are advanced but does show some concern. My question is, do I voice my concerns? And if yes, How do I go about this? Is it my business? |

Our state is making it our business. We are told to inform parents of available services, with the idea that early intervention (buzz buzz) can change a child’s course. I’ve told parents, “Based on my experience with children I see some things that could either be just his personality, or could be indications of a little delay. If it is a delay, there is help available.” and then I point them in directions our state has laid out. I let parents know that there are all kinds of kids, but if it ever is something that a trained specialist can find/help, I’d hate not to have mentioned what I’ve noticed after spending days with the child. Of course, each approach varies a bit depending on the parent.

Our state has said that we oh not allowed to diagnose or speculate whether a child has a developmental delay or disability because they think that we would be judging the parents children if we did that

Do you use any developmental screenings like ages and stages?
It will tell you if the child is behind or you have high expectations. For instance, there is nothing wrong with teaching colors at two but the average child does not know them/ get them correct until three. |

Knowing colours and letters and numbers is not age appropriate for 2 years old. This is more of a 4-5 year old (maybe 3 yrs for colour).
Milestone. Eating with his hands is a bit concerning but he might just need practice. I dunno he sounds like a typical 2 yr old to me! |
